Can a LAN connection do this?

Hi,

My ISP provides Internet through LAN in my area and the other day i heard a blast and my system stopped working, i opened it up and found the area near the LAN port blackened.. i switched off the power and then rebooted and everything is working fine except the LAN connection which is dead.. i have heard others in my area have the same problem and was wondering if a LAN connection can even do something like this? does a LAN connection carry power and somehow a surge screwed up my system?

Please advice as i am going to talk to my ISP in sometime...

Ethernet carries power.

They have ethernet ports on some surge protectors for a reason. At least a replacement card is cheap.

Sure, the ethernet does carry a certain amount of voltage. But it looks to me like one of your ISP's repeaters decided it would send a 220V surge down the line = fried LAN port.

There's a good side to this:

It could have fried your whole computer or worse, started a little fire.

Good luck with talking to your ISP - I would consider getting some sort of surge protection for that LAN cable before plugging it back in though.
