Can a KVM cabpable of 1600x1200 output handle 1680 x 1050

I'm using Avocent switchview OSDs KVM (analog 15 pin VGA video i\o) that is capable of handling max video signals at 1600x1200. I'm thinking about switching out the 21" CRT I have to a 20-21" Wide aspect LCD panel which has native resolution of 1680x1050.
I would think the bandwidth not counting refresh rate of the 1600x1200 (1920000) would be greater than 1680x1050 (1764000) so the KVM should be able to utilize the wide aspect LCD panel.

Has anyone have any exerance with similar setup and know if it will work? I aked Avocent, and the support person replied via email indicating that 1680 wont work as it's over 1600. Is it possible that the video is actually locked at a particular limit on Horizontal and Vertical vs total bandwith capability?

Well, I can't do 1440x900 on my 17" crt with a native res of 1280x1024.
?1280x1024 ~1,310,000
?1440x900 ~1,290,000
so if your theory is correct, then it should work, but alas, not. The screen size would probably be shrinked drastically becasue of the need for more horizontal pixels, but I would think all the monitor would need to do was put bars up and down...
Bottom line, I don' think it will work.

On the monitor side there is the DDC signal that tells your system what it's capable of displaying. So if 1440x900 is not listed as one of the modes, you would not be able to select that as an output resolution. There maybe ways around it by modifying the monitor definition or force the monitor to a different monitor than what is attached. On some older KVM that does not pass thru the DDC signal properly, I used to manually change the monitor detected from a generic to the actual monitor or a NEC 21" to use higher resolutions.

But the above problem is on the video chipset of the KVM side, and I'm at a lost there on how it's usually implemented. Almost tempted to just buy a 20" from Staples, try to see if it works then return it once I get an answer and buy the real monitor I want. But don't feel right using them just for that.
