I have DSL on my computer from mindspring/earthlink, and i run win2k & win98se (dual boot)

my bro is running the same on his computer.

what do i have to buy and do in order to get it so we both can use the dsl at the same time?

also, would it be possible for both of us to play games like CounterStrike at the same time?

thanks all

OK, this topic has been answered a million times here, but here goes:

1) get a DSL router... Most expensive but the easilest to setup

2) put 2 NICs in your PC, and 1 in your brother's... connect the PCs using a crossover cable, setup network and run NAT software on your PC to share the connection...

3) dig up an old unused PC and run Linux on it, make this your server (the PC connected to the DSL modem)... follow the same thing as in #2, but this time with 3 PCs so you will probably need a hub...

As for playing games, some games servers do not let 2 ppl go on with the same IP address... if the server you play on is like this, you're out of luck... otherwise you should be able to play with your brother on the same server without any problems, once you get the internet connection sharing going...

Depending which of the 3 methods in my earlier post you choose to go with, the hub may or may not help you...

If you go with method #1 (buying a router), many router has something like a 4-port built-in switch, so if you do buy one of these router a hub would be useless to you...

If you go with #2 (have one of your PC act as server), you dont NEED a hub neither... since you only have 2 PCs, you can simply connect them using a crossover cable... However if you plan to add more PCs later to your network, getting a hub now even if you are using this method would be a good idea... so bottomline, you dont need a hub, but you can use one...

You would need some kind of hub/switch if u go with method #3... since now you are connecting 3 PCs together for the network, a hub/switch would be needed...

Hope this helps!
