Can a hospital staff member go in while ill?

Watching House, he went in with a cold. Wouldn't that a big no-no, since it's contagious? I realize it's just a show, but I'm curious.

Pshhh, you quoted a TV show. Damn you. I was just about to say that in House he did that.

Well that's ok. *pullls out another TV show* In Grey's Anatomy Christina is really sick and she still goes in.

Yeah, they go in while ill all the time... though I'm not sure if they're technically supposed to or not.

All the time.
I don't believe there's a rule against it... I'm there all the time (dropping my wife off/visiting her for dinner/picking her up) and see a lot of nurses with colds, etc. For what it's worth, many things, such as colds, are more contagious just before the symptoms actually appear. Furthermore, most nurses are constantly washing their hands, thus they really don't transmit the colds etc. to their patients very well.

It happens all the time. We are so short staffed if anyone calls out, someone else usually is mandated for a 16 hr shift which then starts a domino effect of call outs. Most people would rather just suck it up instead of messing up everyone's plans.
