Can a GTX 780 Ti be justified for my setup?

Hi all,

I am new here and I need some advice. I am currently using the following:

CPU: 2600k @ 3.4 (STOCK) I have never overclocked before
GPU: GTX 760
OS:WINDOWS 8.1
RAM: 16 GB @ 1333Mhz

So I am considering getting a EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked, 3GB for $765 CAD. In fact its actually $865 after taxes. Now I am wondering, will this card be overkill? I play on 1080p and always turn on VSYNC. I hate seeing screen tearing. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster BX2450. Is my CPU a bottleneck? I had my computer built for me so I dont know how to install an All in One water cooler and then try OCing the cpu.

In fact I am upgrading to ensure I get 30+ FPS on upcoming games like Dragon Age Inquisition, The Witcher 3, The next Batman Arkham title etc...

Will my GTX 760 be enough? Do I bite the bullet and upgrade? Or possibly upgrade to a GTX 780 (non Ti) for around $604 after taxes?

All advice and comments are appreciated. I hope I didn't ask too silly of a question for my first post hehe :)

You should be fine with what you have. Save your money for the next generation. Overclocking would be a good idea as well. If you must upgrade, wait for the GTX 880.

Also, you don't need water cooling to overclock, especially for Sandy Bridge. You could probably get to 4GHz even with the stock cooler.

Like Techhog has said, your main weakness is your CPU @ stock. You can pickup a decent cooler for around $30-40 Canadian dollars. That should allow a decent overclock with decent temps.
When the Witcher 3 comes then you can revisit getting a new video card if the need arises.

Ok I have decided not to go with the upgrade. I am just going to wait for the next gen cards to come out (8xx)

My mobo is an Asus P8Z77-v LX

How do I go about overclocking my CPU ? Is it safe to try and see how I do with the stock cooler? I dont wanna go over 4GHZ. 4GHZ is just fine with me.

Appreciate all comments and thanks again so far guys.

I was running 2 780Ti superclocked cards in SLI with my 2600k setup, with the CPU heavily overclocked and it was not a problem. Like it has been said, OC your CPU and you should be just fine.

If you really want to upgrade, there are several R9 290 cards in the FS/FT forum that are inexpensive, if you can find a buyer willing to ship to Canada.

At 1920x1080, price/perf drops off pretty fast if you go above the 780 or the R9-290. I have a hard time recommending products like the 780 Ti unless you're really flush with cash.

In fact I am upgrading to ensure I get 30+ FPS on upcoming games like Dragon Age Inquisition, The Witcher 3, The next Batman Arkham title etc...
It's impossible to tell what the sys reqs will be to hit 30+ fps in these games until they're released, benched, and AMD/Nvidia get a chance to push some optimized drivers for them.

From the position of already having a 760, I think the most efficient use of your funds is to wait until next generation rolls around, at least until the games that you're most interested in have been released.

Just look up a guide on YouTube. (Search for a Sandy Bridge or i7 2600K specifically, and if you can find one on a Z77 board it would be ideal.) There are many. Also, I want to note that even though you don't necessarily need a better cooler for a light overclock, it's still recommended, and while 4GHz should be enough in most cases, 4.5GHz would be ideal. (This canbe done with a $30-40 air cooler.) With that said, don't do anything you're really uncomfortable with even after watching a guide.

If you hate screen tearing and want to max out games at fluid 60fps w/ vysnc, then i'd highly reccomend a GPU upgrade if your current games aren't performing.

The 760 should be ok at 1080P with stock 2600k.

If you want a substantial upgrade then
1) OC CPU to 4.2ghz+
-Reading for a few days should let you know if you're comfortable with OC'ing CPU

2) 780/780ti/R9 290 GPU upgrade
-Get as much GPU in single card as you can afford and figure out where price/performance satisfies you

There are substantial improvements to be had in demanding games at 1080P by upgrading your setup using those two steps.

Thanks all. I overclocked for 4.0 GHZ. Essence_of_War, thanks a lot I followed that guide exactly. I used google, but when I checked on this thread, it looks like you found the same one :D

Thanks for all the help guys.

You should be good with 1080P with that setup. If you want to 'upgrade' for DA3/TW3, wait for them to come out. Likely there will be be either (1) cheaper prices on existing hw by then or (2) refreshes that are better.

I am holding-out myself until 1Q 2015 for 20nm cards. I could use some extra power myself, but just can't justify the price for performance right now.

As a compromise, you could always get a 2nd GTX 760 and run a pair until the next 'true next gen' card arrives.
