Can a Geforce FX5500 Video Card Handle Games?

Hey guys,

A friend of mine installed Medal of Honor in his PC. He said that when he launches the game, he gets a few intro screens, then screen goes black, but keeps getting audio of the game.

Is this happening because of his video card?
If yes, which card would you recommend for a very low budget (80-90 USD max.)?

He wants to play games such; FarCry, CoD..., but he's not a hardcore gamer.

Please advice.

His main PC components:
DFI LanParty UT Nf3 250
AMD 64 3000 (not oc'd)
1gb Corsair Value RAM
WD 80gb HD
Geforce FX5500 127mb
RaidMax Samurai case

He needs a new video card ASAP.
The rest of his PC is fine.
Im gessing he has AGP
If he has little more get a 6600GT ~130-150
I would not recomend any video card for long term use thats under $150 Its not just worth it because in 2 years you will be forced to upgade again instead of 3-4.

I must disagree - because in two years he will have upgraded again to PCI-e, socket M2 (probably) and dual core. The fact is, considering he isn't hardcore and he is very CPU limited (remember: non overclocked 1.8 ghz) buying a GTO^2 is a waste, no matter how awesome the card is.

OP - tell your friend to buy a 9800pro - probably one available in the sale forum right now. You mention Far Cry, and I have personally gamed completely playable at 1280x1024 in Far Cry with medium-good settings, No AA, on a 1.6ghz Northwood and a 9700 Pro. He will be fine with the 9800pro and the 3000+.

3000+ is a very good processor. Just because its 1.8ghz clock speed doesn't mean it isn't quality.

4400 X2 is clocked at like 2.6ghz anyway, right? And it's top of the line.

Anyway, 9800Pro is pretty good, or spend a little bit more for 6600GT.

I really doubt that he is in any way CPU limited by any available card out there, ANY card that he buys will give him a boost to performance, assuming he's going to be increasing in resolution/image quality. Playing CS:source on my computer with a 3500+ and a 6800 GT vs. my friend's laptop with a X700 and a Pentium M 2.0 is a huge difference, and the CPUs are not different enough to warrant my ability to play at 1280X1024 at 4aa/8af while he's limited to lower resolutions and eye candy.

However, my babbling is talking about a 250+ card versus his allowance of 90$ish. Having had a 5500, it could run the Farcry, but don't expect to get many extras out of it.
I'd recommend saving up another 120$ for a much greater jump, which makes the entire purchase more worth it. Another thing to look out for is are AGP and 6--- series incompatibility issues which have been brought up in the past, so perhaps going ATI may help with those.

You all are right, he won't be CPU limited, and I do know that the A64 even at 1.8ghz is very good. I stand behind my 9800pro idea.

Yeah, 9800 Pro or 6600 GT are the best choices at the moment... they will probably last until its time to change the mobo and get a PCI-e card anyway.
