can a flash drive be read as a hard drive and not a disk?

I have a lexar jumpdrive. I need a program to access it as a hard drive for backup purposes. Unfortunately, the program only sees it as a disk in a drive, so I can only backup one of the sections of data. If I try to add another piece, it says that it has to erase the drive before backing up the data.Capacity isn't the issue. Oh, and I'm using Windows XP. Is there anyway to change this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The problem is the program you are using. I have programs that back up data regularly to flash media drives. They are simply a lettered drive to them. What program are you talking about? As a work arounbd, have you tried backing up the file or files in question just using Windows Explorer?
