Can a fish carry the HIV virus -- the virus that causes AIDS?

Me and some friends were drinking and one guy threatened another by saying "You keep talking like that, I'm gonna feed you an HIV fish."

Of course all of just said something along the lines of "you stupid guy" but another guy said "HIV can't survive in a fish" and another guy said "Yes it can" then they had a great big science discussion (Yes, that's how every drinking argument goes about among Berkeley kids)

Anyhow, can it survive in a fish? I don't want to know if it can have AIDS or if it can pass it around. Let's say for some reason, I wanted to bring the HIV virus from California to Mexico but I had no test tubes...only a live fish.

Maybe for a few minutes if you dipped it in HIV infected blood and then threw it at someone, but other than that, no.

Depends on where the fish has been and where you put it.

Doesn't the H in HIV stand for Human? Last human fish I saw, I was really, really drunk. ;)

I'm sure everyone has seen the pic of the guy and the fish at rotten.com.

Fish can't carry it. So, go about your business. Just remember, fish will bite.

I imagine that a fish could be injected with the HIV virus, whether it would become
infected with the disease however, is another matter.

HIV doesn't survive well outside of the body. I highly doubt that a fish can carry the HIV virus.

The only way fish can carry HIV is if it's the fish between your girlfriend's legs.
