Can a dying power supply destroy the components?

Well, not exactly blew up.

System specs are below.

I was playing Bioshock and the power supply, a cheap 550 watt by Logisys, went hissssPOP! and everything died. At least I think it was the power supply. I smelled the burning smell when I put my nose to it, and it was really hot.

I've got no problem replacing the PSU, but I'm worried it might've damaged my motherboard, or other components. Can someone give me peace of mind? Excluding the power supply, this machine isn't even a week old.

MOD EDIT: Moved to Power Supplies. - Zap

It's possible other components were effected, but you're probably ok. Just take it as a lesson learned, don't skimp on the important parts :)

Yep, a cheap power supply doesn't save you any money in the long run. I would inspect your parts for any areas that look burned, check for bulging capacitors on the motherboard, etc. The only way to tell for sure is to plug in a functioning power supply and see what happens.

If the PSU blew up on the primary side, you're good.

If the PSU blew up on the secondary side, you may have lost some components.

We can only speculate the outcome until you get another PSU in there and fire it up!

Can it? Yep.

Did it? Not necessarily. Get yourself a GOOD power supply this time, hook everything up, and see what happens.

I had a system killed by a deer power supply that blew up.

In the end it's cheaper to spend more on a good power supply, then spending less on a cheap one.

The same thing happened to me several years ago. I couldn't get anything to work after the PSU blewup. To recover the HD contents I bought an identical HD on ebay and a friend changed out the circuit board. This worked fine, so I didn't lose data. If necessary, try this.
