Can a DV cam get video with USB?

Borrowed a friend's camera to capture our child's birth but it's time to give it back. I don't want to just send this to a VCR, I'd like to edit it on the PC and send some small clips out.

I'm using the included VideoWave III-se... USB seems to work fine for getting the still snapshots but I can't seem to capture the video from USB... can it be done?

It's a Sony MiniDV DCR-TRV17 if that helps....

If worse comes to worse, I can capture using my crummy TV tuner, but I'll need to dig up an adapter for RCA audio to 1/8" and the quality will be pretty stinky...

I'd say it's probby worth buying a $20 firewire card to be able to edit a good quality version of an event like that for your friend. USB can capture video - but I read that even USB2 has problems dropping frames compared to firewire, which is almost flawless. The DV cam has firewire or iLink, right?

Yeah those cards are cheap.

My motherboard actually has 1394 Firewire built in. 🙂 He just doesn't have a cable....

So how does it work? You just play the video in VCR mode? Or is it sucked through the firewire port like a giant file? I'm totally new to this.... 🙁

Then just buy a $20 firewire cable. 🙂

You have to use a program on the PC side to capture the video. What program will you use to edit it?

This disc has:

MGI PhotoSuite v8.1
PhotoSuite SE v1.1
VideoWave IIIse

I don't know what they're all good for or how to capture the video. If it can pull the video off the camera using USB I'll do it - I don't care about any skipped frames. I just can't figure out HOW! 🙁

You can't use USB. For one thing, it's too slow. It would take days and days. For another, the camera won't do it.

Well, the software's HELP menu did reveal that under the "capture" menu, you can only access the camera with 1394 Firewire. I guess I could buy my friend a cable to thank him for the use of his camera. 🙂

USB was useless then... well... I was able to get his pictures and put them on CD for him - now he can finally clear out his pictures and start taking more. 😉
