Can a CPU kill a motherboard?

Hi All,
I just bought an AMD processor (used) on ebay. I plugged it into a working motherboard and the fans ran for about 6 seconds and then they turned off as though the power supply had popped. I reset the switch, waited a few seconds and turned the computer back on. The same thing happened. So I put the original cpu back in and the same thing happened.

Is it possible that a bad processor killed the working motherboard and when I put a good cpu back into the now dead motherboard the motherboard killed the functioning cpu?

How can I test a cpu other than by putting it into a working motherboard?

TIA!

Welcome to the Forums.

Yes it is possible for a bad Processor to cause a motherboard
failure, but there are many other factors too.

You may want to give a detail description of your system (motherboard, CPU, etc..)
for further assistance.

Are you sure you seated the CPU, heatsink and Fan properly?
Have you tried Clearing the CMOS (remember to unplug power cord)?

I agree. I think it's possible, but way more possible that you need to try resetting the processor a few more times and clearing the CMOS.

yes what you said happened to a tech where i worked, i watched it first hand, the cpu that we thought worked killed a customers mobo, then we put that original working cpu back in the original mobo and it still didnt post, not only was that mobo now bad, the freaking cpu was killed too! long story short, never use customer stuff to test on other customer stuff since the company will be stuck paying for it, better to use only new parts and if you kill it, rma it since its far cheaper. 😀
