I want to be able to connect my cell phone to my modem so I can have wireless internet. Is it possible? I have the Nokia 5190 cell phone and a standard 56k modem on my laptop.

Thanks!

Depends on your cell provider and whether or not you have the adapter cable for your modem to your phone.

Well, thats the question. :)

Is there an adapter cable for the Nokia 5190 that would allow me to do it. :)

iirc, the 51xx series can act like a modem, but requires some expensive external hoo-haa. The 61xx series has the hardware built in, so you just need the right connecter->serial cable. The Motorola StarTAC/Timeport are ready to go also, and only require the correct part.

Check the http://www.nokia.com for information on your particular phone.

Hmm... that is expensive.

Actually, the 5190 and the 6190 share the same expensive part. :(

Interesting thing is that only allows me to connect my cell phone to the serial port. I really want one that can plug directly into a modem. Are there any phones that allow for that?

Yes, there are sirfergy. You would have to use an analog cell phone though (since a modem translates analog to digital and vice versa). This would be extremely slow (9600 kb/s or slower), and I would not suggest doing it this way. Most of the current digital cell phones (with SprintPCS, AT&T, etc.) have a modem type of device built into the cellular network. You just need to purchase a serial cable (for $60 or so!), and your computer will think it's a regular external modem. Currently, the maximum speed you can connect at is 14.4 kb/s. Your computer will report a connection of 19.2 kb/s because that is how fast the connection is between the computer and the phone. I've done this with SprintPCS and it works great. They even have free software available to compress the data so that it is comparable to a 56k modem connection. In the not too distant future, high speed access (similar to DSL/cable) will be available, and will work with all current phones, according to SprintPCS.

I hope this helps!

Hmm..... my main goal with this is to connect the modem on my visor with the cell phone. Those unfortunately do not have a serial port.
