Can A Canon S200 Take in a 512mb Compact Flash?

I was planning to purchase a 512mb compact flash for my family member's Canon S200. I was told that the Canon S200 may only take up to 256mb on some other forum. Is that true?

besides, at its highest resolution and stuff, you'll run out of batteries before you fill up the card in a session!

I'm pretty sure the limit is 256 MB ... thats what it says in the manual. but then that could be just because there was no 512 out there when they wrote themanual

sure why not. the advantage of compact flash is basically unlimited memory upgradability, memory controller is part of the flash card instead of the camera. so ur not shafted like if u buy non cf cameras🙂 i had this old 1mega pixel pos that worked with256mb cf, it was nutz🙂

Yes, it can take it. However, it's a waste of money because the resolution is only 2.1MPixel and the movies are short, so you'll never fill it up because first your battery will run out.

I would get two 256MB CF's vs 1 512MB CF.

hells no! the s200 is all about convenience. carrying an extra card is not convenience🙁

Compact flash cards have the controller built into the card itself. Therefore it should take the 512 card no problem...

Not true. It said so in the S100 manual too and I called up Canon and they said it wouldn't work but I bought a 256MB card anyway and it worked perfectly.

I have a 1GB card in my S40 and it works fine.

A second battery can be had for under $12 on eBay...so if your first one runs out you could continue using the large capacity Compact Flash card just by putting in your second(charged) battery.

be careful. there are 2 batteries supported by the s200. the type being shipped w/ the cameras is a newer lithium ion version. the $12 batteries on ebay are older/sh!ttier versions.

I got a couple on eBay (NB-1L) for $10 shipped each from eForcity. They have a lower mAh rating than the NB-1LH that came with the camera (700 vs. 780, I believe) (EDIT: I was wrong, the NB-1LH is 840 mAh) but I haven't noticed a big difference. I definitely think the generics are a better value than the Canon-brand NB-1LH which are around $50 I believe.

Re: CF, I would go with the 512MB. I think you're likely to run out of battery before you fill the 256MB anyway, that's 500+ shots and the batteries are rated for ~1 hour of continuous use
