can a 6450 handle sims and wow at 1920x1080?

Hi guys.

My friend broke his video card while moving. He doesn't game much, just wow and whatever the latest Sims is at 1080p. Would a 6450 fills his needs?

I'm going to say no, someone else may chime in, I'm not really familiar with those two games. I would definitely look for a 5770/6770 or a 7750 if your really interested in gaming at all with a 1080P resolution.

It will probably play the Sims, and it would play wow at lowest settings.

It does not require any external power, so no need to worry about having a larger PSU or anything, and it will run both of those great.

I agree, though I have not seen benchmarks for the Sims much or the 6450. But I do have a 6450 in a secondary computer, and it is pretty much useless for gaming at 1080p.

I would also recommend the HD7750.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not that familiar with either game myself so really didn't know what to shoot for.

The 6450 was meant to be a stop-gag until around christmas when he planned to completely overhaul his system, but from the sound of things, it looks like it won't do him much good.

Id advise against the super low-end 64-bit memory stuff for pretty much anything 3d. A 6570 may be decent enough or the gt 430/630 on the nvidia end.

I just did a quick search of video cards on Newegg in the $25-$50 range. I can't tell you if either of these would be enough, but both should be quite a bit faster than the 6450. A little more money, but a lot more card.

Edit: it wasn't 1080p. The monitor was IIRC 1440 x 900.

WoW has received a lot of graphical updates over the years and though it used to be able to be ran on something like a 9500GT I cannot see it being able to any more. Disclaimer - I am not saying wow looks good/bad.

Speaking of such things. Started playing wow on a 1.1gz Athlon w/ an ATI 9600xt and it ran "ok" during vanilla. Had an Phemon 7750 w/ an 8800gt when Wrath came out. The system during vanilla and the system during Wrath ran about the same fps wise.

If it's just for a stop gap try looking for a used 5770/6770. They can usually be had for less than $40.

CPU is a Lynnfield i5, 4GB of ram, 1066Mhz IIRC, the dead GPU is a GTX 460. so no iGPU to fall back on. His box is a brick right now.

I remember trying out vanilla WoW on an ATi 9700. Didn't realize it got upgraded that much.

I dug up an old 4870 512MB edition. Gonna test it out this weekend, if it works I think I'll just ship that off to him. If not, I'll look into the 6570. Thanks.

If the 4870 works, it will probably be the best choice. I have a 4890 and it's capable of playing most modern games at low settings.

The 6570 for $40 AR is about as low as I would go. Be better if you could find a 128bit card with DDR5 but this 6570 is cheap and much better than the 6450 for light gaming.


6450 is great for HTPC and no gaming computers.


Also look in the F/S section. Plenty of people have to sell their old card when they upgrade.

A 6450 is a HTPC card for processors that don't already have a half way decent IGP. It is not a gaming card by any stretch.

Is there a WOW benchmark, preferably one that doesn't require downloading 5GB installer? I have an HD6450 512MB DDR3, Athlon II X2 2.9GHz, 4GB RAM and could do some tests, for shits and giggles. Only caveat is the mobo/chipset is PCI-E 1.1, not 2.0 but that really shouldn't be a significant factor for a GPU in this performance level.

6450 has twice the shader units. Found a review that includes WOW, note that detail settings are "Ultra" level:

Hell just get some heatsink glue and glue it on worse case.

I'll post pics when I get back hone later today.

The heatsink itself looks like its in working order, its the mounting hardware that's screwed.

Basically the mounting bracket is bent and 2 of the pins that mount it to the pcb are broken off. I'm going to try to hammer it back into shape and drill some new holes so I can attach it via a bolt and washer.

I would go to radio shack and buy some heat sink glue. If you use a bolt, be sure you have isolating washers to keep it from touching any traces on the board. Oh, and I assume you mean oyu are going to drill the heatsink? Do *NOT* drill the PCB. Its a multi-layer PCB and has traces running through the middle that you cannot see.

Got my roommate to take pics:

The top pin is broken off, and though its hard to tell from the picture, the entire bracket is wrapped slightly such that the hsf wobbles when attached.

Lol Yea, I'm drilling a new hole through the broken pin on the bracket, not the PCB.
