Can a 60/80Gb ATA100 IDE hardrive work on a 440BX chipset?

hi everyone.

I am fixing a friends computer for him. basically, his hard drive is wrecked and im fitting him a new one. he has a Daewoo system of which the chipset is intel 440BX (the mobo is CB641X-BX). The hard drive controller on the motherboard is UDMA 33. I have been told by a couple of people that the maximum sized hard drive i can fit for him is 20Gb - I have no idea why this is so! ... I have never heard of this before - is this true? .. if so - why? ... I assumed that i would be able to install a 60/80Gb ATA100 IDE drive on the system, but this would run at UDMA 33 speed, as this is the fastest the controller can handle?

If i cannot install the 40/60/80Gb drives... then how can i get around this problem?... my friend wants a big hardrive... preferbly 80Gb - i was thinking maybe to install a RAID card and connect the new hardrive on that? - would that work?

thanks for your help in advance!

thanks for the quick reply kingofcomputer!

u said that the SPEED is backward compatible - just confirmed wat i thought.

but wat about the size issue??? - the 2 ppl who said i couldnt install the hard drive said it was because of SIZE - "not more than 20Gb" - is there any truth in that - i've never heard about this before!

Thanks

provided you have an updated bios that can see the full capacity of the hdd, it will work

If the BIOS itself can not see the 80GB HDD, the hard disk manufacturer should have some drive overlay tools to let you see the full capacity of the drive.

I've run my 120GB on my 440BX board before with a BIOS update.

you'll really need to find out the make & model m/board & looking at the version bios when the system first boots.
after that it should be simple enough to check the boards website to see if a bios update is available.
the site should also tell you how to do the update if it's required.
btw I've run a 120GB hdd on an asus bx board using its latest bios

When you first boot your computer, you should see the board manufacturer's name and the model info somewhere on the screen and (usually in the lower left corner) the BIOS number and rev.

Hit the Pause key, and write it down. Then, go to the manufacturer's website, and check for an updated BIOS in their Download section. Many manufacturers include info about what issues each rev addresses. If so, you'll be able to determine whether they've updated to handle your drive.

AFTER READING COMENTS I TRYED TO ATTACH MY ANOTHER COMPUTER 60GIG IBM HARD DISK ON I440BX MOTHER BOARD
BUT WHEN I BOOT MY OLD I440BX P2 COMPUTER IT STUCK ON BOOT UP AND DID'N RECOGNISE 60GIG IBM HARD DISK

I TRYED TO AOTO DETECT IN BIOS SETUP BUT THERE ALSO NOT DETECTED

SO PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I HAS TO DO

IS THERE ANY SETTINGS OF JUMPER OR THERE ANY SPECIAL IDE CABLE

First up, we can't HEAR YOU. Sigh.

Anyway. Put the 60Gb on it's own on the IDE channel. See if it detects it. If so, there'll be a bunch of jumpers on the back of the drive, usually between the power and data connectors. There should be a diagram on the label on the drive showing you which position means what.

Basically, you want one device as Slave and one as Master on each IDE channel, or you can use Cable Select (CS) for both and they'll auto-configure.

Easiest way would be to buy an ata controller card and hook up the drive to it. Since you don't know how to update the computers bios.

I hope so, my GF has a 440bx2 board with the latest BIOS. I'm giving her an 80GB drive. Right now she has a 30GB drive and that works fine. If not, I have an ATA controller card too.
