With these cards being very similar, can the 4870 be flashed to a 4890?; or possibly overclocked to the 4890 specs!?

well if you have read anything about the 4890 you would know its a slightly different chip so no. also even if it was possible what would flashing do that you cant already do be moving the sliders yourself?

4890 is different then 4870 and it's very hard to reach 4890 clocks. You'll have to increase the voltage and even then, 850 mhz might be unreachable. Also GDDR5 might or might not hit 3.9 ghz. I had a Sapphire 4870 that couldn't go past stock memory clocks and 825mhz was the maximum with 1.31V on the gpu. So, I would think that most of the time, 4870 will not hit 4890 clocks.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know.

I wouldn't buy one since I already have a 4870 and the difference isn't that much for the game I play (UT3 DM TDM CTF)
