Can a 266MHz FSB CPU run on a 200MHz FSB Motherboard?

My FIC AZ11e motherboard is rated for "AMD Athlon? Socket A 700MHz~1.3GHz@200MHz FSB". I want to know what would happen if i put in a new processor rated at 266MHz FSB. I ask this so if i get a new motherboard in the future, i would want the extra MHz. I also want to know if i can use a 1.4GHz Tbird on it as well since it is rated at 1.3GHz (Also on pricewatch the 1.4GHz@266 processors are cheaper than the 1.4GHz@200 )

Is there some sort of restricting factor that prevents me from buying ,for example, a new athlon XP 2100 and slapping it in there. I understand that i wouldnt be using its full potential, but would it work?

the XP shouldn't work at all. the Athlon should. it will just run @ multiplyer x 100 (example: 1333mhz =10x133 buss. 1333 @100 buss =1000mhz )
good luck

(edit) i just checked FIC's site and that board only does 1.3ghz @100 buss, so if your thinkin' bout that 1.4

I know the XP wouldn't work on my board im just curious why.

Also in response to what you said would the extra MHz in the 1.4GHz just be wasted or what?

I am running a 1700XP on my MSIk7t...instead of running at 1.47 (133*11), it's running at 1100 (100*133). The main reason is that I wanted a fast processor to replace my duron 600 right now...I will upgrade the MB when I get more money :)

If you are handy with conducive paint and have nerves of steel, unlock the CPU.

Why? A 1.4ghz T-bird is locked at 10.5x multiplier. 10.5x133.333.... = 1400, hence the rating. When you ONLY have a 100mhz bus speed, you get 10.5x*100 = 1050mhz. The 1.4ghz t-bird is now running just over a gigahertz!

If you unlock it, though (check the forums on how to do it, I have never unlocked an Athlon myself), you will be able to either set the multiplier in BIOS or through a jumper or DIP switch bank on the CPU (for 13x or 14x if you're lucky), or change the bridges to force a 14x multiplier.

Then you'll have a 1300mhz or a 1400mhz chip @ 200mhz FSB. The 1400 depends on the motherboard having the setting for 14x (yours may only go up to 13x), or on the ability of the chip to "force" the motherboard to 14x (by changing the bridges, you "lock" the chip to a 14x multiplier)

Good luck.. and hey, if you have a spare hundred bucks, just buy a new mobo, and an Athlon XP. :)
