Can a 21 year old rent a car?

I rented a 27 foot UHAUL truck at 21, if they let me drive that and not an econo box then something is wrong!

unless it is for insurance, you will pay more. The first time I blew the axle on my truck, I had to wait 2 weeks before they would even rent to me becuase I was not 21 yet. It ended up being in the shop for a month because the mecanics were stupid. but it was covered under warranty and I got to beat the piss out of a Rental 😛 I burried that poor s-10 up to the axles in mud 🙂

Yep. Some locations will charge you a fee but the salespeople usually have a fair degree of negotiation freedom so you can sweet-talk them out of charging it.

I've heard most places make you be 25. Anywhere that you only have to be 21?

In NY they are required to rent the car to you, but then can (and do) charge you insane rates.

Yep... but some places won't let you rent bling bling cars... they just let you rent 4 door econoboxes like focus, corolla, neons, etc...

beverly hills rent-a-car will rent you anything though... 😀

My wife and I were under 25 when we got married, and rented a Chrysler Sebring convertible for our honeymoon. We had to pay an additional $25 per day because we were under 25 though.

Its entirely different from one rental company to the next. Call and ASK, specifically.

When I was 23, I reserved a rental car one full month in advance, used my Visa card to secure the reservation. When I made the reservation over the phone, they asked for my DOB, among my other vital information, but did not specifically ask my "age". I gave them my DOB, made the reservation, no problems. Two weeks later, I received a confirmation of my reservation by mail, listing my correct date of birth.

I get to the rental agency and the clerk says "I'm sorry, but we can't rent you a car because you're not at least 25 years of age." I'm like, I've had a reservation for a month, here is my confirmation letter with my correct date of birth listed on it, and you're just telling me this now that I am 1200 miles away from home? She says, I'm sorry, sir, but there's nothing I can do. I demanded to speak with management.

She stated that she is the supervisor and there were no management staff working. By now, there are two people behind me. I said, "Then let me tell you what is going to happen next.

You are going to get a phone book, and you are going to call every rental agency in this city until you find me a rental car, and nobody - NOBODY - will get service at this counter until I get a rental car. If I have to come around that counter, unplug every computer that you have, and smash it to bits on the floor to prevent anyone from getting service before me, I will do that. Am I making myself clear?"

She found a rental agency with a car in 10 minutes.

I'm not normally like that, but I was livid. I was fully prepared to go to jail, I would have smashed every piece of computer equipment to the floor and jumped up and down on it. I would have regretted it later, but I would have done it. 😀

Man, I would have been pissed beyond belief too. That's a bunch of crap.

wish i was there to see this...
lol! I have been patient and understanding in situations most people would not. It was really out of my nature. Had I not been tired, cranky, hungry, and 1200 miles away from home, I would very likely have just stomped away without much of an incident.

I didn't yell at her, but I did speak in the most 'firm' tone possible short of 'shouting' levels. My eyes probably looked very wild and aggressive at that point, I could feel the blood rushing to my ears and face, they were red hot.

I looked that serious because I was that serious. The woman was shaking a little bit when she was on the phone. I think in the back of her mind she was thinking 'OMFG this guy is crazy and is going to kill me if he doesn't get a car.' heh
