can a 18 year old find a better place to work than publix?

I'm a 18 year old... on my summer vacation, in need of a job. I applied to couple places, publix wanted to meet me, the manager told me he needs a person for the "produce" section. I think it's gonna be a lot of physical work. 🙁

starting pay is $6.25 ... is there a different job I should look into or should i just stick with this one?

i have orientation on monday afternoon... but it's not too late to cancel i suppose if i can get something better, more comfortable or better pay, etc.

That sucks, I work at a grocery store and make 11.50 something...with 3 years. That's kinda odd, can you work your pay up quickly?

Try your local golf course, or a drug store - working in a pharmacy is good money.

Btw I turn 18 Nov 5, and I don't really like my job so I wouldn't really recommend a grocery store anyways. I don't know if this is the same at all other places, but everyone with 5+ years HATES their job, but has to stay there because they have nothing else they can do...Esp in this economy. Try to find more than 6.25 though, that is pretty low.

i just moved to this city... i don't think there are many golf courses around here.
i wish i can work as a pharmacy technian or whatever it's called but it's kind of hard to get that position.

I don't know about everyone else but those jobs are usually fun. When I had my first job I worked at IGA (kinda like Publics) and met a bunch of people and had a good time. I don't even remember what I got paid. I was just glad to have a job and finally be doing something productive.

But that don't help u out. If you want some more buckd go for Home Depot. I hear they pay well.

Take the job, get some time under your belt and keep your eyes and ears open for new jobs.
Seems like everytime I take a job, something else comes along right after....
Go for it.
PS.... Try UPS or some other delivery company.

See if you can get a job at your local Costco. They pay a whole lot better than competting stores...I got a job there. And the ppl there are really cool (atleast at my warehouse).

honestly, no. publix isn't all that bad, i work there. just ask if they will pay you more. they will probably say yes. i'm 16 and i started at 6.50

You are in Florida and there are no golf courses around?

:Q

factories are where it's at if you're 18, don't have any special training/abilities, and want money.

Well, this late in the summer I don't think you'll have much luck. If it were earlier, I'd suggest looking in the classifieds, there's usually some good temporary positions in there. Consider yourself lucky to have a job - the teenage unemployment rate is extremely high this year (highest in like 40 years).

Publix is an awesome place to work, especially if you have a schedule to work around. If you're part-time, they will work around your schedule, give you time off almost whenever you need it, etc..

Out here in the bay area most grocery stores start paying about 9 an hour..but i hear they work you like animals. I want a job but dont know where i can even get hired, and im really picky...grr..

Isn't cost of living a bit higher over there?

try looking at a restaurant. Even bussers/expediters make better money than that. When I bus at my restaurant, I usually average 12-13 an hour. and half of that comes in cash tips every night.

I spent my summers working in a steel mill when I was 18-21. Pay was better than $6.25/hr but I was also working in the melt shop.

Scary enough, I enjoyed those summers in the mill. I learned alot about steel making, grades of steel, and the chemisty involved in the making of it.

Nice, a really "Hot" job 😀 Seriously that would be very interesting.

Physical work is quite nice now and then. I used to work at a DJ supply mailorder company. Lugging packages of over 100 vinyl records around really made me fit, didn't need to go to a fitness centre at all while I worked there. Now I do technical stuff in a TV studio with no physical strain whatsoever, the pay is over twice as high though 😛

I'm 17, started a job at 8/hour.

Also, just got a new guy at my place whos 18, also getting 8/hour.

USD, people.

btw, I work at a very small machine shop, and my job is to assemble heaters and controllers. Its not bad work.
