Would it be possible for NVidia to eliminate the 512MB version of 8800GT, leaving only the 256MB card, since the performance of GT is so close to the new GTS...?

NVIDIA G92 Overclocked - GT vs. GTS 512
http://www.tweaktown.com/artic..._vs_gts_512/index.html

"Looking at these numbers I really feel that this just strengthens my point about the 8800GT 512MB being a crazy model. With a bit of overclocking on its stock cooler you can bring it up to the performance of the new stock clocked G92 based 8800GTS.

The 8800GTS is going to launch at $100 USD more than the 8800GT (or about $150 AUD). This is a lot of money. Ultimately the 8800GTS G92 card is going to be a faster offering; and sure the price increase isn't insane like the Ultra was to the GTX, but the model doesn't seem to fit that great into the full lineup. If on the other hand the good G92 cores only go to the 8800GTS and the 8800GT becomes a poor overclocker then it could be a different story. Also, if the 512MB model becomes discontinued and a lower speed 256MB model hits the market we again could see how it would become a good model. The bottom line though is that the 8800GT 512MB is such a good model you can completely understand why there are so many on back order.

There has to be a reason for the lack of stock though, and personally I think it has to do with the fact that once the 8800GTS 512MB becomes available the 512MB 8800GT is going to suddenly become completely unavailable. The card took so much attention away from the new 3870 and 3850 that people simply don't know these ATI counterparts exist. If NVIDIA can ride this wave going into the Christmas break then they're laughing all the way to the bank. If someone is happy to overclock, it's hard to recommend the GTS to them. However, it could end up being the only card in stock over this holiday period. Time will tell"

Personally I think it would make sense for nVidia to do something like that sames the prices of the 512 8800GT is way beyond MSRP and is much closer to the MSRP for the new 8800GTS but then again...

7800GTX 512MB were going for $750USD at frys and newegg. Alot of people bought it to be really pissed off when R580 and G72 came out. Rollo the leader of the nvidia noob at that time fooled alot of people into buying it. I do remember few member buying it in SLI :( 1500 :(

Disagree about the 3870. ATI has been facing the same issues of demand far outpacing the ability to provide enough GPUs to the card makers. Once supply catches up with demand, there will be a drop of prices back to MSRP. By the end of Q1, we will see a very powerful 3880 dual core monster. If ATI has the drivers right, this card will force Nvidia to really bump up the top end, which should take the 8800GT/3870 firmly in the mid-range $150-200 price point. Any attempt by Nvidia to drive the cost/performance up would result in a clear win for ATI and vice-versa.

It'd be nice if we could all hold off/resist en masse' with our vid card purchases so that these vultures would end up having to reduce their prices back to at least what they advertised as the MSRP's. This BS of $30, $50, and more in markups has got to go. The whole GPU/vid card industry is totally out of scale with the rest of the computer component industry ! :|

they will be able to do so if some of their execs smoked a bong and decided to do it as joke to get amds hope up... or just because they are high.. but just because they CAN do it doesn't mean they WOULD...
There is no law or agency preventing them from taking the card off the market... but they would not be doing it, it would be daft of them to do so.
