Can 802.11B make it two city blocks if in Line of Site?

I need to establish a connection two blocks from my workplace, to my apartment. I can either get a DSL connection which means I have to have a phone line, or I can get somehow create a wireless bridge from my employer (web host) to my apartment. I was thinking about having them setup a wireless router and installing a wireless nic in my pc at home. It is just under two city blocks (about 600 feet) and I should have line up site or something close.

Can this be done?
 
I know that. i am wondering about standard off the shelf 802.11b products that I can find at best buy. If I buy a $100 wireless router and wireless pci card can it make it 600 feet w/o line of site?
 
To be quite honest...maybe....
There is allot to factor into the distance that a wireless signal will travel.

Buildings in the way, fog, snow, trees that may be not all they way out there but some branches and leaves in the way.
The type of anntenae you intend to use, etc.

You can acutllay send 802.11b over 6 miles with some quality equipment. (Line of sight)

 
My answer... No. I cant get my off the shelf 802.11b to go 100'. I will have to try this summer on a 100ºF day with very high humidiy and see how far I can get it. The day I tryed it the temp was about 0ºF with next to no humidity.
 
I said 6 miles but i meant 12 miles...
And as stated..with home stuff it just isnt likely at all.

I am not talking about hugely expensive antennas. Buy the right equipment with removable antennas. Another 100 in antennas, and you will be set, as long as it is true "line of sight".

Edit: Build your own "Pringles" can antenna for a few bucks!!
 
i assume you'll be using some pretty high encryption if you're going to be blasting internet over a city sprawl.
