Can 4 college kids take care of a hamster?

I know a guy giving out hamsters, and was wondering if it was possible for our room to have one and take care of in our apartment..It's a sizable apt. of 1000 sq ft, with two bathrooms and a balcony. What temperatures are hamsters most comfortable at?

Sounds like one of those so-called real life shows. Might run for a season or two.

<announcer voice> Next week, Bobby tries to see if the hamster can swim in the toilet. But what happens when he goes to answer the door and someone has to use the bathroom. Find out next week, on 4 college kids and hamster.

I'm willing to bet when it comes time to clean it's cage none of you are gonna want to do it.

How bad would the smell be after a while? Is it possible to leave him outside during the day, covered up or something? It's LA, where it rarely drops below 50..

I wouldn't. Hamsters smell foul, aren't very interesting, and die easily.
I'd get a rat, they don't smell quite as bad, are way more interesting, and much more resilient.

EDIT: I wouldn't ever leave it outside. You never know if you'll have a rainy frigid day or unexpected warmth and sunlight. Seriously, if you must have a rodent, get a rat. (Or a chinchilla is probably the best smelling, but highly temperature sensitive.)

i wonder how long before they try giving it beer to see what happens and other assorted goodies

I think you can survive on beer. It has lots of carbs and other things. You should test it on the hamster first though.

You're right.

Syniger, based on your last question, do not get a hamster. I will call the SPCA.

/agree

cleaning the cage isnt that bad, but if you are really this clueless...hmm id say just get a virtual pet on the computer

Oh yeah! Hamsters are the easiest things to take care of. They're comfortable at the same temps you are. The only thing that you have to be careful about is not keeping them in a drafty location. Also, they are escape artists, so you'll have to get a very secure cage. Don't leave it outside. It will for sure die. If you clean the cage weekly they don't smell so bad. I've had about 40 at a time and it didn't stink(I cleaned ALL the cages every three days). I bred them for a long time.

Only do this if you set up a 24/7 webcam and blog for it. I look forward to premier of "4 College Kids and Hamster"

Do you have liquid nitrogen & a hammer?

OMG, I demand pics if you attempt this!

for some reason I broke out laughing after imagining a baked hamster shattering into millions of tiny pieces. 😱

easy, when i was a freshman in the dorms, i kept a hammy. put it on a plastic container with a top, you know, those containers parents buy for you to move in and out of the dorms, so its big enough, won't die of lack of air.

made a paper funnel, jammed it in hammies mouth, and poured some whiskey down the pipes. he was out cold. gave it to a chick for pack of cigs.
