can 2K Pro be an app server?

I guess the title says it. I've got a 2K Pro box and was wondering if it can be setup to be an app server, or if you need Advanced Server to do that...

Depends on how you run the apps. If you're just sharing the executables then yes, but it has a 10 client limit. If you want to run the apps from the box with Terminal Services or Citrix, no you need Server.

So, say I want to share Microsoft Word. I would still need to have it installed on all the machines to share the .exe's.

So, with terminal services, do people just see a copy of their desktop from the server, kind of like VNC, but everyone has their own desktop? edit: and then the terminals could be slow? like 486's? if you had a fast computer and 2K Server, you could just have a bunch of old 486's for the rest of the computers in a house, right? Could they still play multimedia, or would it be limited to basic stuff?

You need Server to do what you want, not Advanced Server. Advanced Server is mega-$$$ and is only needed if you are using > 4 processors or doing clustering.

You are on the right track with Terminal Services - we have over 500 machines here that are Pentium 200's or slower that are very happy running their apps from a terminal server. Each user that connects has his/her own terminal session that they can customize, etc. and the settings will keep when the logoff.

WTS can get spendy but not really considering how much you save in hardware upgrade costs. Keep in mind that you have to purchase a W2K Server license, a W2K Server CAL for each workstation, and a WTS CAL for each workstation as well. (Except W2K Pro workstations which have a WTS CAL included in their licensing.)

List Prices:

W2K Server w/5 CALs: $999
W2K Server CALs: $40 each
WTS CALs: ~ $150 each

what does WTS stand for? I assume it is what allows the user to log on to the server? How are the refresh rates for the screens on a setup like this over 100BaseTX? Would it be faster to run a program locally on a slow machine, or remotely on a fast machine, in terms of snappiness?

I believe you need Citrix MetaFrame for sound and >256 colors, and it's not cheap.

But I doubt I'd try to watch a video over TS anyway, even with full 100Mbs it would be hard to keep 30fps.
