Does Camry have an airbag sensor that sense certain amount of weight on it before it is turn on?

Airbag OFF indicator light when my 65 lbs niece sit in the passenger seat.
Random Airbag ON or Airbag OFF light indicator goes on when my 90 lbs niece sit in the passenger seat.
Airbag ON indicator light when I'm (175 lbs) sit in the passenger seat.

2007 Camry Owner's Manual doesn't have any literature regarding airbag weight/sensor or maintenance.

yeah, there's an occupant weight sensor in the passenger seat. it has a weight threshold, it won't just turn on for any small amount of weight put on it. 65lb kids aren't supposed to be in the passenger seat, unless they're one tiny thirteen year old.

Yeah, she is a really skinny 65 lbs tall 12 year old. She is taller than her 16 year old sister that weight 90 lbs.

ah. well, NHTSA recommend under 13 in the back i believe, but she's gonna be right around the limit, regardless of a year.

i'm not sure if the pad in the seat is an actual sensor or just a switch, but either way i doubt the value that trips the light can be changed. if the owners manual doesn't state anything about occupant weight and air bags, you could try calling the dealer. perhaps it's not functioning right, if so, they're the ones who would know.

or just tell your niece to eat some sammiches, dammit.

Just out of curiosity, are such airbag sensors mandatory on newer cars? For some reason I thought there was a law about that, but I couldn't find any evidence either way for that.

My Civic was the same way. Shopping bags would be enough to turn the airbag off.
