Hello everyone!

My camry '05 is close to the 100K mile mark...

I don't think the rear shoes / drums have ever been replaced

1: Are the shoes used for anything other than the e-brake ?

2: I don't have any problems, noises, just wondering if these have to be replaced ?

Thanks!

If the rear only has drum brakes then yes they work when you normally brake, not just the parking brake.

I would inspect and clean them first. If they are worn then replace if not then keep driving.

Thank you

I watched someone on youtube and it looks "simple" enough to check, this is now a project

Thanks for you help!

this is typical of rear drum brakes. My camry went about 3 sets of front brakes to one set of rears.

Yeah, sounds about right. And if you drive nicely you can 100k without ever touching the brakes!

2005 car with drum brakes?

Very common in this range of vehicles to have rear drums on the lower model lines. I guess it saves a couple hundred and I wouldn't be surprised if there are still a couple models still setup like this. It can be kind of weird feeling since the fronts are often noticeably stronger than the rears.

I'm at 170k on the factory pads.

Hybrid?

I had a customer this weekend with a Ford Escape hybrid with around 160k on it. Was replacing the rear brake pads, original set, and the front original set still had probably 10k or more left on them. Even he was surprised.

Yeah, hybrid, but I replaced the pads on my last car at 120k, assuming it was time, only to find they still had a fair bit of life left.

Regenerative braking does help taking a lot of wear off the brakes.

The car is mainly driven around town areas, brakes have never been an issue
and yes it is the basic camry model, lowest probably, with a timing chain :)

This thing chews tires though...
