Camping stove suggestions?

After a few successful camping trips with cold grub (mmm, GORP), we're looking to get a camping stove. Any suggestions?

I prefer the multi-fuel Coleman, if you run out of Coleman fuel, you can use either gasoline or alcohol.

i got a coleman 2 stove top.

but usually i just use my cast iron in the fire or ambers. it works just well.

Coleman white gas or propane. I have both, and both are good, though with propane, you'll have to deal with lugging around the cylinder (5Gal tank) or several small tanks.

Coleman two burner white gas, I have one that is older than me (inherited from grandfather), that has been used heavily and fires up everytime. They're great.

Coleman. Nuff said.

I inheirited the 2 burner white gas fired Coleman stove that my dad bought in the early 70s. It still works great.

Is this for backpacking or car camping?

Car camping just get a big Coleman multi-burner stove. Anything similar to this will do.

If it is for backpacking You have a lot of options. Canister stoves are cheap and light . I have this stove and highly recommend it. MSR also makes a number of great backpacking stoves. They last forever and are easy to maintain.

Both, in theory. This next time will be car camping, but I'd like something backpackable.

Edit: wo0t! post #1000!

Definely stay away from those huge Coleman camp stoves then. You don't want to be carrying those.

MSR is a pretty good bet. I have a whisperlite that I've never had the chance to use, but I hear they hold up very well. You can use them anywhere (ie high altitude) and can burn just about anything if you are willing to do the cleanup work.

The reason I have the (above mentioned) primus is that is will also hook up to butane/propane canisters in addition to the white gas fuel bottle I normally carry. That makes for a very light backup fuel source. (plus it was on sale at my local REI 😉 ) I used it on a 4 day backpacking trip with 10 people and when our other stove had issues (an old, beat up MSR) we still managed to cook for everyone on that stove.

Coleman makes a mini single burner, multi fuel cookstove, it works great.

Look around on eBay, you should be able to get a good price is you pay attention.

Well, i guess it is up to me to bring in the Ghetto...

Cinderblocks make great stoves. Just flip it on it's side and fill with paper and charcoal. It will get hot enough to use a frying pan on and it is easy clean up.

yup.. if car camping anything is good. but if backpacking, u got to stay away from coleman or any of the walmart stuff unless u dont mind carrying a 50lb backpack. REI is the place to checkout any backpacking stuff. I carry a MSR one but i believe that one is discontinued. It looks pretty similar to their simmerlite model. Have fun.

That's actually a cool idea, but damn.. talk about heavy. You have to bring the cinder block AND the charcoal... lol

another vote for coleman - i have both the large two burner camp stove and a newer apex multi-fuel.

both have excellent flame control and are very easy to work with.

MSR's whisperlite series is another good choice for a backpack-able stove.

It couldn't be more easy to operate. Burns hot and clean. Unless you're cooking for a large group of people, this is a very good stove to have.

I got one of those for a dollar at a garage sale.... LOVE it! Super compact, light weight. And does a heck of a lot better job at cooking than the stupid little sterno stoves, etc. IIRC, there's also a little mini lantern that you can get for the fuel canister - giving you an alternate source of light as well.

if i had to buy a stove right now, i would buy a snow peak giga power. i use this right now. piezo doesnt work very well, and is slightly heavier and bulkier than the snow peak. only reason i got it was becuase it was at a good price.

cannister stoves are easier to use than white gas stoves... but in the long term (very long), white gas will be cheaper.

Cool! This is the one I ended-up getting, or one almost exactly like it. I had wanted to get an MSR Supersomething (I don't remember the name) because it could also use European canisters too, but Paragon was out of stock (today was my errand day and we're camping next weekend so...).

You guys were awesome with the linking. I felt like I knew what I was talking about when I made the purchase. Thanks again!
