Many years ago my uncle had a camera (240i BNC to coax type F) put at the crest of his yard to watch the busy road. There was also a 12" CRT monitor, which was installed in a weather tight enclosure at the end of the driveway, which was connected to the camera through buried PVC conduit.

I say was, because the tube finally burned out. I thought about trying to replace the tube itself, and also considered something like this.

My question is whether it is a better idea in the long run to reccomend replacing the camera and display together, and pulling Cat5 into the conduit to use a more modern setup, or continue going the route of replacing the CRT and hoping the camera keeps working?

DVR is not needed, and resolution is not as important as low motion blur and high focus. The weather tight box can be made to be theft deterrent and some sort of automatic shutoff would be nice (previous system stayed on 24/7 and glowed at night). Wireless is also not preferred because of camera power requirements, and it is probably only 175-200 feet of conduit from camera pole to monitor box.

Thanks in advance, it seems most kits have DVR built in.

Why would you not have a DVR? Without DVR you have no evidence

What if a car goes by on that busy street and you hear a woman screaming? Well without DVR you have nothing to give the police.

Well, it is an unnecessary feature. We are not looking to gather evidence, just to watch out for the next moron that is exceeding the speed of the road to pull safely out of the driveway.(it is a 45mph zone, was a gravel road not more than 20 years ago)

The police where my uncle live are more interested in busting meth labs and being racist twits than worrying about screaming women in a random car, and in a town of 13K, your scenario seems a lot less likely than me teaching someone how to use a DVR without pulling my hair out.

Basically I put that in because I thought it might lower the cost. If it does have DVR and cost the same it is not a big deal.
