Are those Canon designations or Nikon or both or what?
Nikor Lens used to be considered th best, at least that is what I thought.
Has Canon over taken them?
How?
Why?

Canon L lenses are Canon's Professional Series glass. The lens are more precision ground and have better coatings and faster quieter focusing mechanisms. Nikon and Canon have equivalent glass in their professional lines.

IMO they are about Equal

the Canon L glass is their High end glass that is the best quality sharpest.... These are comparable to the Nikon AF-S ED Lenses of similar price
Canon came out with USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) and IS (image stabilizer) before Nikon came out with AF-S (there version of USM) and VR (vibration reduction same as IS) because canon came out with these features first they kinda got an edge on Nikon for a bit, but now are basically equal

canon makes a few Zoom lenses that Nikon does not that cover specific ranges and vice verse

F-Mount lenses refer to the mount that Nikon uses

I've always heard that Zeiss Tessar lenses are pretty much the top of the line.

well it is kinda true, Zeiss makes great optics, just not for a great deal of cameras so its less known/popular and its too expensive, they arnt THAT much better then the rest of the stuff out there

Sony uses Zeiss?

I've only used Zeiss with Contax 35mm camera bodies. Their line of Yashica mount lenses are amazing.

Cool. Still, in digitals I think that Canon and Olympus have Sony beat in terms of CCD performance and that makes a lot of difference.

I'm still aspiring to a Contax RTS-III. Wonderful camera body. Shame the film advance in my old Contaz 139 popped a gear. It's a pain to find a place to fix a Contax.
