Camera lens step down rings... or step up?

I have a Canon A40 and a lens adapter for it.(52mm) I found a 48mm wide angle view lens at a thrift store for $1, so I got it. Do I need a 52mm->48mm Step Down ring, or a 48mm->52mm Step Up ring?

Which way does it go?
