camera gurus: which tripod to get?

i have been wanting a tripod for quite some time now. what should i be looking for? i only have a compact canon powershot S50 right now but i might get a SLR in the future...

Anything that is sturdy IMO. Try some out at the shop and see which one feels best. You don't want a weak, light tripod that shakes or gets blown in the wind, lol.






Actually, I know nothing of tripods so do not take my advice.

If you're at all serious about photography, or plan to be in the future, don't be cheap about a tripod. A good setup may cost a bit more than the cheapy $30 tripods you see all over the place, but it will last a lifetime, and be a WAY more stable and tweakable setup. Bogen is a good, not too expensive brand, I have a Bogen setup currently. Also, with good tripods, know that the legs are often sold separately from the head. This is for versatility; you can get a good set of legs, and swap from a pan/tilt head to a Ballhead.
