so a few years back i had old compaq presario (500mhz) that i put a firewire card in for video capture... this was using windows 98SE, all worked well except the cpu/vid card weren't nearly powerful enough to capture video, so i never got to. the camera was a canon elura and was detected by the PC.
fast forward to today and that same elura might possibly have problems ("dv in" flashes on screen whether a firewire cable is plugged into it or not), and i just bought a new canon elura 100. also got a new PC - amd X2 4400 + epox 9npa+ultra + XP sp1. now my problem is that NEITHER camcorder is detected by the PC through firewire, and i've tried also on another older PC that has both 98SE and winXP (dual boot), and it doesn't see them either. i purchased a new firewire cable earlier too, so that's unlikely it.

my questions: does ANYONE know ANYTHING about my problem? i've searched around and there are endless numbers of people with the same problem "my DV camcorder doesn't work through my PCs firewire". rarely do they end in answers either. i've got till monday to get rid of the elura 100 through RMA... i'm curious if anyone has/knows any firewire issues with my mobo or its drivers (latest nforce4)? anyone have similar experiences that they resolved? i've tried xp sp2 also, to no avail, though i've heard sp2 disabled firewire drivers anyway.

any and all help appreciated :(

Different hardware, but my youngest boy has XP/SP2, Adaptec firewire card, old Sony camcorder, and a cable from Kmart. It worked fine for him first try. Not much help though, sorry.

I use Firewire in all three of my computers - all with SP2 - no problem. But - Firewire must have adequate power. Usually this is provided by the end device, i.e., your camera. If that power is insufficient, the device won't be seen.

Try it with your camera connected to A/C through the aux cable provided.
