Camera buffs, should I get the eos 350d or not?

I currently own a Olympus 3030z, bought 5 years ago but it has done me very well over the years but now its time to upgrade. I currently have my eyes set on the 350d, awsome image quality, replaceable lense, light and compact (compared to other slr cameras)

I checked it out at the store the other day and I found the build quality only average at best. Very disapointed about that 🙁 has that cheap plasticy feel
I know there are alot of eos 300d owners on the forum and the build finish is supposed to be the same, anyone of you feel the same way about the build quality?

Regardless of that bit I am most likely going to buy one and my biggest problem is if I should go with the basic pack with a single lense or go with the pack where they include a 55-200mm lense as well.

btw, I have never owned a slr camera before so this lense business is all new to me 😛

This summer is going to be awsome 😀

go for the bigger lense. you'll get frustrated very quickly with the limitations of the lense it comes with.

Try some of the other brands such as Nikon or Pentax. Find a camera that feels nice and natural in your hands.

I was just doing a little research and reading up on SLR digital cameras and I think if I were to get one I would look at the following and perhaps later think about a nice zoom lens ($$$):

LEXAR COMPACTFLASH CARD 40X 1.0GB $96.70

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens $559.99

Canon Digital Rebel XT Body w/accessories $837.00

$1493.69

On the other hand, for only $325.13, Canon sells the Powershot S1 3.2MP 10X with IS!

All DSLRs are great.

First try them out in your hand.

You're a fool if you buy without playing around with all of them.

Pentax ISTDS was my choice.

I'd skip that lens (55-200). Either get it with the kit lens or the 17-85IS is you have the extra dough. Either way, get the $65 50mm f/1.8 for razor sharpness and low-light capabilities.

I went with the 350D XT black Kit over the Nikon D70 Kit. The XT was a little bit cheaper (Dell: $999 - 15% discount as of 4/6/05) but the D70 has a better lens. The deciding factor was that I wanted a smaller size.

$1613.69

Fixed.

that 50mm lense is dirt cheap 🙂
how does it compare to the lense that comes with the camera?

I really like the 350D. It's a lot of camera for the money. Much better than the 300D it replaces and well worth the $100 or so price difference. I wish I had waited and purchased that instead of the 300D I have now. Don't get me wrong, the 300D is a good camera but the 350D is almost as good as the 20D.

Who cares about the plastic? 😕

It's a prime, so its focal length is fixed. It is as sharp as any lens in Canons line-up. Its speed (f/1.8) enables you to take available light pictures in almost all common circumstances. The only downside is that 50mm is a bit long for close quarter shots on a 1.6x crop camera.

Regardless, having a fixed focal length requires you to think a bit more about composition and technique. IMO, it is a must-have for anybody with an SLR.

might as well get the 50mm lense, its the cheapest one in the store 😛

what good zoom lense would you guys recomend?

that lens is hideously slow

You can say that again!

Eh, I personally found the 350D to be too small for even my small hands.

But if I were in your shoes, I'd buy an EOS-300D/Digital Rebel (Body Only) for $627 at BuyDig.com and a 1GB SanDisk Ultra II CF card for $85 at newegg.com.

The lens is the harder choice IMO, depending on your budget. Here are some recommendations:

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM for $230

Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for $270

Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD for $400

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for $400

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for $410

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for $600

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF 17-40mm f/4L USM for $680

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM for $1,140

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for $1,700.

So, depending on your shooting style/zoom preference for wide angle or telephoto, you can spend as little as $942 or as much as $2,412. Of course, we're talking starter lenses here, the beginning of your lens collection! We're not talking about future lenses, camera bags, camera straps, tripods, printers, etc. Keep that in mind!

yeah, this is an expensive hobby, I quickly realised that 😛
think I'm going to go with the basic starter pack, just the default lense, then gradualy spend more and more money on lenses

GTaudiophile,
why the 300 and not the 350?

Don't forget the 1.6x multiplier on these cameras. Meaning, paired with a 350D, the 28-105mm lens is really 45-170mm.

I personally own the Canon 17-85mm F4.0 IS lens. It's a fantastic "walk-around" lens that I will always use for a majority of my shots. The Image Stabilizer system works wonders in low-light. But I have found I enjoy using the wide angle more than telephoto, so here is a lens I am considering for the future:

Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for $800

And of course everyone needs at least one fast prime lens:

Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM (Not Yet For Sale)

Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM for $310

Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II for $75

Lastly, if you are dead set on the Canon 17-85 F4.0 IS lens but think it's too expensive, consider this for $100 less:

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC for $500
