My brother visited this past weekend and went with some friends to 6th Street to hit up a few bars. While they were there, this girl was going around and giving out free cans of the "Snus" to anyone who wanted to try them. He brought back some of the mint flavored ones that night and showed it to me. They're little pouches just like the Skoal "bandits" but you don't spit when you use them. Apparently pasteurized tobacco doesn't require it. I tried it out and was impressed (didn't taste like tobacco)... it was weird to not spit, though. I've always stayed away from smokeless tobacco because I think the spitting factor is disgusting, but this is a decent alternative to those who use it. Of course, ALL tobacco is bad for you but at least there is something like this on the way. It's definitely better for you than smoking and it's not as gross as having to constantly spit. Seems that right now it can only be found here in Austin and in Portland but I'm sure it will be more widely available soon.
Just a heads up for those who dip or smoke.

Camel Snus, a smokeless tobacco product, to be tested in two markets
Wednesday, May 03, 2006
Camel plans to begin a test market of Camel Snus (pronounced "snoose"), a smokeless, spitless tobacco product that will come in a small pouch that is placed between the lip and gum. Reynolds American Inc. announced the move as it reported its first-quarter 2006 earnings on April 27.
Camel Snus is different from most moist snuff sold in the United States, according to the company, in that its tobacco is pasteurized, not fermented, and it contains less moisture and salt than moist snuff. As a result, Camel Snus does not require the consumer to spit, making it a convenient option for adult tobacco consumers, the company said. Test markets will be in Portland, Ore., and Austin, Texas, the company said.
