camcorder to computer

i have a camcorder but it only has the three connectors the tv, and i have a x800xl with vga, dvi and svideo
the card came with yellow cable to svideo but how do i hook up the audio
 
Go to Radio Shack, or your local equivalent, and ask for a cable that has:

two female RCA phono plugs to 1/8" male stereo jack

plug that into your sound card, and you should be good to go. Make sure you get one that has a STEREO 1/8" jack and not a mono 1/8" jack, if you want to keep the left/right channels seperate. Although from a camcorder mic, it might not make much difference.
 
um, is the video card VIVO? (Video In Video Out)

if not then u aint hooking your camcorder to computer, you'll need to buy a TV/video card with VI or VIVO on its bracket.

then worry about the sound...heh

 
i have sony handy cam vision steady shot ccd-trv308 ntsc video hi8 (hope that helps)
i dont think my card is a vivo its a ati x800xl pci-e
 
do i need special software to get my computer to recognize it, i have xp pro and roxio easy media creator 7, is that enough
 
Your Manual Says it comes with a Mono out. You will need a Analog Video In Card to capture video to your computer.

However, I do believe Traire answered your question.

i need a card that has input, the x800xl only has output.
the camcorder has svideo so i guess i need that audio thing traire said and a card that has input. anyone have a suggestion for pci. and do i need any special software
 
If your camcorder has firewire then by all means get some good software and large hard drive and pull the video into your PC. Or Option 2.

Option 2 the easiest method.
If you dont have firewire or you have old video tapes buy a set top DVD recorder for under 100.00 now. Most have firewire ports on them. Its easy to copy to a DVD rewritable pop the disc into your Computer and edit the video that way. And the DVD recorder replaces your VCR for recording shows.

Dont bother with video capture cards today. I owned about 12 of them and the only one I use is the ATI HDTV wonder to capture HD feeds. I never record to the SVHS it just easier to record the a DVD then edit it with the pc later.
 
i do have a dvdr but it has no firewire, however it has svideo and the three other ones(red, yellow, and white) do i plug all three in or just svideo or what. whats some good software for editing, any freeware thats not too bad
 
If you want to go cheap here's what you do. Get this or a similar product ADS DVD Xpress. My neighbor got this. It only worked by using the software that came with it. Video looks great. I recommend capturing it at DVD quality (even if it's not). It just looks better. This assumes you have a USB2 port.

Another way, this is what I ended up doing, I purchased a new camcorder and made sure it had Passthrough Technology. This feature allows analog devices (older camcorders, vcrs, etc.) to transfer video from them to the camcorder or PC. I'm putting my old VHS and 8mm on my computer then to DVD. It's very easy once you do it a couple times. You can purchase a camcorder with this feature for less than $400. This would mean that all your new videos will be Digital not Analog. I recommend this method unless you really like your older camcorder!

The most common problem with analog to digital conversion is audio and video sync. To do this right you want a product that does the conversion with hardware and not software. The camcorder and ADS Xpress have this. Make sure you get one with hardware MPEG2 Compression.

i dont want to buy a new camcorder, if it came to that i would just use the dvdr and then go to my compter with the dvd. i dont want to do that because that wastes a dvd. my current camcorder has svideo out, A/v out. so is there a card to hook the camcorder to the computer and edit the dvd that way. another problem, i want to convert all my old vhs to dvd. is there some thing i can get to do both these things and whats good software
 
Go here and look for a card that has MPEG2 hardware encounding.

Tons of software out there. I use Pinnacle, Sonic, Nero and MS Movie Maker. I'm looking at purchasing the Premier Lite. Heard it's got better timelines and so forth.
