Camcorder Software?

I just got myself a Sony DCR-TRV140 and it came with PIXELA Imagemaker, which is an okay program to use to get the video, but is there a better program to use? Also I notice that sometimes it stalls and the recording is messed up because of the 1 millisecond of the video stopping then starting again. How can I make sure I can get a smooth video capture and sound?
