I would like something that looks pretty close to film as possible. Considering do some independent film making stuff. I'm really new to this, but have heard things about the Sony HDR-HC7 and the Canon HV20.

My budget is around 1k...I can go a little higher.

Anyone hear of anything better? Is there one camera that lots of people general recommend?

Thanks.

HV20. You would use it for the 24p. As the budget permits, add a 35mm mini-adapter with a prime and you get Hollywood depth of field. Lots of discussion in DVinfo.net and HDforIndies. HV20 specific forum at DVInfo Net

Cool thanks for the link. Are there any "advantages" the Sony would have over the Canon if I wasn't considering film quality?

Thanks again

I went with the Sony for audio in and better OIS in extreme conditions (mountain bike helmet cam). Turns out the EIS in the HC5 is better then the OIS in the HC7 under extreme conditions. I "fix" it in post with Mercalli now as an Avid Liquid plug-in.

The Canon has the slightly better pic. I think there may not be audio in on the HV20, but I could be wrong. Fix that with a Zoom H4 (straight up or with mics into it) and a clapper board (sync in post as audio is on a seperate device... just like it is in Hollywood). A Zoom H4 is around $200.

edit - the audio section at Dvinfo.net is most excellent too.
