camcorder question

I have a hi-8 camecorder and to get the video off the camera to my pc I use windows movie maker, and capture the video by recording in realtime. So if i have a 1 hr video i have to let it record for 1 hr. IS there a easier way to do this?

Camcorders are considered analog devices. They will only playback in real time.
Mini-DV (not miniDVD) works the same. It can be brought in digitally via firewire
but again only in real time.
Once it is on the hard drive it can be copied to another hard drive faster than real time
with fast drives, etc.

CD or DVD is digital and can be copied digitally faster than real time.

Pro video formats may have SDI i/o. This can be transferred faster than real time.
