Camcorder Purchase

I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder (general-purpose use, from family to sports to nature), and based on reviews and what I've read here at AT, it seems like the Panasonic TM900K ($685) and the Canon M40 ($330) are two pretty popular choices. I'm also considering the Canon M41 ($399, same as M40 but with optical viewfinder).

I have two questions for you guys:

(1) Besides 60p, what other features does the Panasonic have that the Canon does not, and do those features justify the extra cost? (I can see that the Panasonic is "3D compatible," but my understanding is that it needs a separate lens that I'm not in the market for right now)

(2) This will be my first HD camcorder. For general-purpose use, which of these two cameras would you recommend (and if recommending the Canon, is the VF on the M41 necessary for outdoor use)?

Thanks much!

The TM900K should technically do a better job of capturing fine detail because it has individual R, G & B sensors, but whether or not you'll actually see that detail in playback depends on several variables.

A VF is not necessary for use outdoors because the camcorders have matte screens which are easier to see in bright conditions. I actually find that using a VF on such a small camcorder is not only awkward, but results in footage that seems haphazardly shot. Shooting amateur video is better when you have situational awareness, and you lose that if you've got your eye glued to a VF (and a tiny one at that).

The Canon M40 also is better in low light compared to the TM900K. Couple that with a price that's 50% less, and I think you can't find a better value.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the Canon anyway since it's so much cheaper. Any necessary accessories that you'd recommend? Tripod, mic, etc?

A tripod if you don't plan on holding it much in your hands; otherwise buy a steadicam. A quick search on eBay and Amazon show some basic ones for $50-$80.

Or you can build one for under $30 if you're handy and you have the spare time.

Handy enough to give it a try. Getting a ton of results when I google. For $14 this seems promising? Is there a homemade one that you recommend? Thanks again.
