Camcorder mic?

I'm looking into getting a Canon Optura 50 camcorder. (any comments on quality?) The reviews say that the mic sometimes picks up motor noise from the cam. The camera sports a cold shoe and a mic input - what would be a good mic to pair with this? I'm not really into camcorder stuff so I'd appreciate any input here 🙂

Do they have any good, compact, inexpensive camcorders? I'm just looking for something small...

-MiniDV
-Firewire connection
-SMALL
-Good quality (audio & video)
-Under $500 ($400 or less would be ideal)
