It's a love or hate place.

I hated it, it was filthy, poverty everywhere, people trying to rip you off at every turn, rubbish all over the beaches and in the ocean. Angkor Wat is cool as well as learning about the Kmer Roug (sp?) and the genocide and stuff. I was excited to go, but couldn't wait to get the hell out of that country.

On the contrary I have many friends who absolutely love the place and would go back in a heartbeat.

I thought it was highly overrated.
Disgustingly dirty and uncivilized place.
I would have left after the first day if I could, and Angkor Wat (while an OK place if you enjoy stuff like that) did not make up for any of it.
I'd have to be kidnapped to go back.

 Bloody awful immorality with an advocation for a vacation to prey upon sex-slaves, the poor, and more often than not -- children. Infamously it has also become a paedophilia's dream. Sex tourism by relatively wealthy tourists is to shit upon the local you choose to go.

If that's for you, then don't catch an STD to infect another and hopefully to help societies you will leave of this world sooner. Unfortunately, AIDS/HIV and Hep B are common among Cambodian sex trade workers. You may not just help along with the mind warping and quickening deaths among those Cambodians, but likely bring own more death and discomfort home with you.

Now for tourists in Cambodia -- it will be what you make of it. Do not expect a Phi Phi, Phuket, nor Chiang Mai. Be aware of where you may be going, its history, and of what such a history can do to a civilisation. Be aware of past belligerants and if rarely challenged (though most Cambodians will be quite hospitable) DO NOT defend US devastation of the Vietnam-Cambodian border regions and its fantastic contribution to the Khmer Rouge victory. Sadly, I have seen some US tourists do just that within a bar and had to intercede.

As all cities, Phnom Penh is quite varied. Compared to many other developing countries - particularly in the Americas -- Cambodia is a fairly safe desination. Go with an agenda to learn, explore, and relax. Do not go with the dreams of a tropical all-inclusive resort.

.....sorry, rushed post.
