Cam Newton declares for the NFL draft...

the guys on the radio were discussing that it was slightly surreal watching a game that in 4 or 5 years the NCAA is going to tell us never happened

I remember hearing that the NCAA asked Newton's dad not to come to the game but instead we saw him celebrating on the field with his son.

Everyone keeps talking about how this will end up being another vacated Heisman, another vacated title... no, no it won't. This would end up being much worse for the NCAA as people would be pointing the finger at them for letting it happen this time which is entirely different than our reaction to the USC deal.

They'll say at the time of their decision they did not have enough evidence, or some spiel like that.

Fact of the matter is there is still an open NCAA investigation. And there is still an FBI investigation into Auburn Boosters(probably not related but could pose other issues for Aubrun).

Am I the only one who feels bad for Cam?

He seems like a really great kid. And he is a kid. Did you see him clowning around on the sidelines with his Gatoraid bottle? It sucks that his career is always going to have this cloud hanging over it.

Why not talk about the good instead of focusing on the bad? Move on people.

The NCAA doesn't give a shit. What was the fallout of the Reggie Bush debacle? Nothing. What was the fallout to the Derrick Rose debacle? Nothing. And 3 years from now when this title is vacated the fallout will be nothing.

Well....by his own proclamation, he is an Instrument of God. So he's got that going for him. Which is good.

A top tier Division I school like Auburn, for example, clears between $8 - 10M for winning the BCS Championship. Hell, they get somewhere between $6 - 8M just for making it to a BCS Bowl game.

There is no way in hell they can tell a father of a student athlete, like Cam Newton, for example, that he can't attend the game over a lousy ~$200k. Give me an f'ng break. You know, a lot of this is the media's fault. Not all of it, but a lot of it. The rest of the blame goes to the greedy bastards in the NCAA. They make a huge stink over every single dollar that goes into a player's pocket, yet, it's <1% of what they make on any given Saturday.

The bigger picture here is, <10% of these athletes who devote, on average, 4 years of their lives to these schools, even get drafted. But yet, the other 90% get hammered if they accept a car, $50 bill, whatever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge college FB fan, but the NCAA & most of the journalists who cover it are out of their damn minds. The NCAA doesn't have any room to bitch & moan & make the huge fuss they do about these incidents. They should STFU & be glad these student athletes work as hard as they do so the top folks at the NCAA can own multi million dollar homes & drive Bentley's.

So a big FU to the NCAA for telling Cam's dad he couldn't attend the game. Go drive your Bentley & STFU.

Oh, & the same comments towards the NCAA for punishing the OSU student athletes for selling materials that were OWNED & EARNED by them. NCAA, go find a cave somewhere & shove it. You have no room or right to humiliate these struggling athletes, especially when they do it so you can have a 4500 sq ft. home.

They do give a shit which is why nothing substantial will ever come of this other than Auburn having a national title and us having message board fodder until a week or two after the NFL draft when it will all be forgotten.

I actually just read an article that says many schools, including Auburn after expenses for teams, food, parties, travel, etc wont likely clear a profit on bowl games.

Yes, it is a common misconception that schools are rolling in money due to their athletic departments. Of all three NCAA divisions, only about two dozen athletic departments are actually self-sustaining.

EDIT: Here is an interesting article about revenues: http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect...lue+Disk+-+FBS+Athletic+Revenues+and+Expenses

Why feel bad for this piece of trash? He's a liar, a cheat, and a thief. He's one torn ACL from standing at the window asking you if you'd like fries with your #2.

From all accounts, he hasn't fallen from the family tree either. This "kid" (who is over the age of 18 *AND* knows right from wrong) learned well from the father it appears. Cam knew exactly what was going on, was even on the phone for some of the conversations (according to inside information...yet to be presented as evidence however), and was a willing participant.

What should happen is that if, and that's a huge *IF*, Gene Chizik and the Auburn staff/school had no knowledge of Cam's under-the-table doings and get hammered by the NCAA, they should go after Cam and sue him once he signs for his millions. These "kids", as you put it, know exactly what they are allowed to do and not do while scholar-athletes...it's funny that many of them can't spell scholar-athlete. They knowingly break the rules and know, if they're the campus studs, there won't be any repurcussions.

By the way...was watching either the Nat'l Championship game or one of the other bowl games and it showed the players coming off the bus and they all had the same headphones on...frigging $150 DreBeats...every one of them. I guess "team paraphernalia" now includes stuff like that. Man, wish it was like that when I played...

He's a first rounder for sure but it's a big question mark of how he'll adapt to a true Pro style offense.

^^ Chizik seems like a huge douchebag. When being interviewed after the game, did you notice how he didn't give any credit to Oregon? His ego was hilarious to watch, glad I never played for someone like that.

His criminal activity aside, he is too slow to be dangerous running (he isnt going to run past or through nfl linebackers). He floats the ball too much. He is going to be about the same player Jason Campbell is. He might be decent or serviceable, but he won't be a superstar. I say he drops in the draft.

Gotta wonder if he's going to turn out to be another Vince Young.

The ESPN NFL Draft Guru slated him for, at best, mid teens iirc.

I remember the game announcers (Kirk and Brent) mention it during the game, but I turned it off after the game ended. Didn't watch the interviews or the trophy presentation.

Wasn't the gist of it his dad didn't kill anybody so it would be wrong to prevent Cam from sharing this moment of his life with his dad.

What makes him seem like a great kid? Great athlete, sure, but great kid? There is a reason he left Florida....

I, frankly, am more concerned about Cam's academic problems than anything else. If the stories out of Florida are true and Cam faced academic expulsion, I don't believe he should be allowed to participate in college athletics simply by virtue of transfer. If these guys are supposed to be STUDENT-athletes, and the NCAA wants us to believe that with all of their commercials, then it seems reprehensible to allow someone to play who has a history of repeated academic dishonesty. But the NCAA has proven that all it really cares about is revenue.

Well, he probably had little to no choice in the matter. He's not going to do well as an NFL QB, and if he stayed the likelihood that the NCAA/FBI investigations would kill his eligibility is high. My guess is that he peaked on monday night.
