Gen. Honore says Chicago needs Natl. Guard to make streets safe

To reduce the homicides and shootings plaguing Chicago streets, elected officials should consider calling on the state and federal governments for help, even the National Guard if necessary, said a retired Army lieutenant general who spearheaded the military response after Hurricane Katrina.

Honore, known for his no-nonsense leadership, was in Chicago as part of The HistoryMakers project to record and archive the stories of African-American military leaders.

To tackle the violence here, Honore said, the state police and other law enforcement agencies could lend a hand to local police. And the National Guard could take over routine duties, patrolling the streets and handling traffic, while police concentrate their efforts on solving crimes and increasing their presence in troubled neighborhoods.

Just ban guns with more than 7 round magazines and close the gun show loophole. Problem solved :colbert:

The police do not have the ability to do sweeps problem areas.

What happened with Capone?

Target one gang at a time. Or are the gangs politically protected?

Heh the people of Chicago will have the ultimate police state they desire. Full with AFVs on every corner and troops going on patrol. And finally, we will have invaded one of our own cities. Wonder if we can secure it as well as one of those dumps in the ME?

Precedent has been set already when Katrina hit.

It was the only way to get the upper hand after the storm.

The local Police were outgunned just as Chicago PD is outgunned.

Out gunned? Actually they confiscated all firearms within eye sight and then the crooked cops within the department went on a rampage of theft, assaults and murders.

Edit: In the end you won't solve Chicago's crime problems by enforcing a police state. The issues run deeper than just the using the club of a police state being able to solve the reasons behind Chicago's crime and murder rate.

Chicago citizens get what they collectively have asked for.

"We have met the enemy and it is us"

Good point. I hope they get it and all that untrained-in-policing that comes along with it just so we can use them as an example.

Of course this is ridiculous and won't happen. Chance of it happening is exactly and precisely 0%.

But doesnt chicago have some of the strictest gun laws in the country? I thought it made sense to make lawful people unable to own guns?

What happened to Capone was syphilis and Federal convictions for tax evasion and failing to file tax returns.

Chicago Law Enforcement had nothing to do with either...

Where Capone got his money from was prohibition.

If you want to stop the Chicago gangs, dry up their cash flow. That is, legalize drugs. That's how the syndicate that Capone built got stopped.

I see that Illinois and Chicago's draconian gun laws are working well.

When the bad guy knows that no citizen can carry a gun, well it's like shooting fish in a barrel, they don't shoot back.

The solution is clear, pass even more restrictive gun laws and peace will rein over the land of Lincoln.

I wouldn't call the guy who spearheaded Katrina an expert nor would I want him giving me advice.

Chicago is fucked period. Unlike other cities where a Republican can get some blame, this shit is based entirely on liberal policy.

Sounds a bit like Detroit.

The long stretch of temperate weather, major arrests of gang leaders sparking turf wars, and changes to police tactics are mostly responsible. Of course other social and political issues are always there pushing things along too.

Still the per capita murder rate doesn't crack the top 10 in the country even with the recent increase. If you want to see a place with a truly shocking murder rate New Orleans would be where to go where, with all respect to the General, troops did not solve the murder problem.

To really tackle the problem the city needs more cops, decriminalization of drugs, and to address the social problems inside the black community that contribute heavily.

New Orleans may have a higher rate per 100,000 but it's 165 murders are 1/3 of Chicago's 511 murders.

Per capta numbers are the only real way to look at the problem. The total number is inconsequential. Of course the total is what gets played up in the media because it makes an emotional impact.
