i know that you cannot use a wii classic controller to play gamecube games.. so basically it is for the virtual console only. but can you use a gamecube controller on the virtual console for everything? i seem to be finding mixed answers via google. some say it can be used for virtual console, some say no, and others say for certain games only. can someone shed some light on the truth of this matter? thanks

You cannot use the Classic controller for Gamecube games

You can use the Gamecube controller for most (currently all I believe) virtual console games.

Yup. Although the classic controller has every button and stick that the GC has, as well as the analog triggers.

My guess is that nintendo is waiting a few months to sell out of existing stocks of gamecube controllers and memory cards. Once they become scarce, we'll get a magical firmware update that will let us use CCs for GC games, and save GC games to the internal memory.

yea thats kind of what i figured too, but honestly i like the gamecube controllers better than the classic controller. i just want to know for sure that the gamecube controller will work for everything that is in the virtual console before i go return my classic controllers.

mugs: you say that it works with all games as of now... does that mean there is a possibility of it not working with future virtual console games? i just dont see why you cant use either one since they essentially have all the same buttons.

i personally bought the wireless wavebird nintendo brand controllers and they rock.. much better to have it completely wireless than have to plug it into the wii remote and have that small wire (as with the classic controller)

i have 2 wavebirds and a classic at home. not sure what to do with the classic yet. its still unopened because the wavebird works for everything so far.

What bugs me is that they didn't let developers use the Classic controller even as an option in games.

Metal Slug Anthology just doesn't work with anything other than a Cube controller.

arg this angers me to no end... so basically say you just want to play a few different games ranging from wii games, gamecube games, and virtual console games... you will first need two wii remotes to play tennis lets say.. then you need 2 gamecube controllers to play any gamecube games... then if you want to play certain games you need to get 2 nunchuk controllers, and then if the gamecube controller doesnt work for the virtual console game you need to get two classic controllers, now lets put that in list form with prices

2 x Wii Remote @ $40 ea = $80
2 x Classic Contr @ $20 e = $40
2 x Nunchuk contr @20 ea = $40
2 x Wavebird Wireless @ $30 ea = $60
1 x Gamecube mem card @ $20 ea = $20

---------------------------------------------------
total = $240 in just the damn controllers... add that to the price tag and you have a ps3

not to mention if you want the bongo's thtas more money, or the keyboard which is $30... jeez

300 bux for controllers is totally rediculous

This is where Nintendo gets you, there is a lot of profit for them. I really enjoyed Zelda and Wii Sports, but I sold it while the demand is high. One thing you are forgetting is that the first remote and nunchuk are included with the system, so no x2 for those. And I thought classic controllers were $19.99?

$19.99 is close enough to $20 to say $20 i think.

don't forget tax on those purchases too!

QFT and tested myself.

If you look before you download the virtual game, it will show you what controllers are supported, WiiRemote, Gameube , Classic...it has a symbol next to the game.

I think I'm gonna go and return my classic controllers today, I don't see any use for them since I just bought two wireless wavebird controllers.

The VC controller is has a much much better Dpad then the wavebirds/GC controllers. Since nearly all the VC games use the dpad thats why the VC controller exist imo

Compared to the original SNES pad though, the D-pad on the CC is terrible. Its far too easy to swing into the diagonals when you're just trying to move in one direction.

There is a chart that I saw online somewhere that said which controllers work with what games. I believe it's somewhere in the official wii thread, but I am not sure which page it's on.
