I suppose I should have expected a thread about calling in gay to naturally evolve into a thread about Star Wars, but I was still pleasantly surprised.

Maybe I'll call into work as a Sith Lord. Doesn't get much gayer than that...

I don't see this as being effective. If I'm a gay guy working as a IT guy for a small business, I'm only hurting the owner and my co-workers by not coming in. If I'm not a complete jackass I probably get on well with them all and wouldn't want to do that, nor risk my job. If I do it, I am hurting people I personally know and may be friendly with, while nobody outside the office will know or care I did not show up to work that day.

I agree with what you are saying, but the idea is to show people how much they all depend on GLBT part of our community. I think a better idea would be something like a monthly 'wear the rainbow' day. Hurting the community is not what is needed, being visible is.
Unfortunately that comes with risks, but the invisibility that has protected the GLBT is also what is making it so hard to get accepted.
