so...i moved into my new place and there are only two outlets in my room and it sucks...big time...i'm wanting to run some new lines from the break into my room...i have no doubt i can run them through the attic and down the wall, as i've done it many times with cat5 and coax...but i dont know how to tie into the breaker (or which one to tie into)...i can replace the outlets no problem, as i had to do it because all of mine were two-prong instead of 3 >.>...again...i just dont know about the breaker...

so...got any guides online? where is a good place to get cable...what kind of cable do i need? thanks :)

When you replaced the outlets, you did ground them, right? Otherwise the grounding prong is useless. If you didn't, I'd suggest taking out the new outlets and replacing them with GFCIs.

Also, this new place isn't an apartment, is it?

Few things first:

Have you done anything like this before?

Find out what is on which lines.
Find out what kind of wire is running off the breakers.
Find out what type of wiring you need. You may need to specifically use BX, or you may be able to use Romex.
Also, you don't want to run electrical wiring along Cable/Ethernet.

You REALLY need to consult your local EC (electrical code) before doing this.

when i replced them i just took the two wires that were on it and put them on the new one...lol..i know the third one wont be used, but at least i wont need those damn adaters on the outsite ;p the new place is a house i rent... >.>...

no i have never run electrical wire from breaker to wall...only replaced outlets...i have run cat5 and coax

i dont want to use the exisiting lines and just split them off to new outlets...i want to run new lines, possibly on a new breaker block so it wont overload with all my ****** on it (4pcs...networking equipment, tv, montiors, etc)
how do i know what kind of wire is comming off the breakers?
how do i find out what type of wire i need?

how much would an electrician charge for this? lol

You rent?

You really need to consult with the owner on this and check your lease.

An electrician is going to be costly, but in your case I would definitely look into it.

As far as the breaker panel... You can pop in a new breaker or you can remove an existing breaker and replace it with a double breaker (2 breakers in half the space).

As far as wiring, as long as the run isn't more than a 100ft, for 15A, you'd be using 14-2 wire. For 20A, you'd be using 12-2.

As far as BX vs. Romex, look at the wiring you currently have. If it has a hard, metal jacket on it, then it's going to be a variant of armored cable, whether it's BX, MC Lite, etc. If it's just a colored jacket on it that houses the wires, it's Romex.

Another problem is, we don't even know if you have copper wiring or aluminum wiring. We can guess that you have copper wiring based on you replacing the existing outlets, however they do work short term together, but you will run into HUGE problems down the road. Think fire, and your insurance not covering you.

I'm going to say this one more time:
You need to check your electrical codes. Get a copy of the national, state, and local codes.

With all the stuff he's going to be putting on the line, he really should have another run.
