calling EE folks: any suggestions on a peak detect circuit? diode+comparator, schmitt triggers, etc

I'm just starting to read up the different options there are for a peak detect circuit, preferably one that can operate on both the rising and falling edge.

Hoping I can get some suggestions here to help jump start me or point me in the right direction.
