Calling Dell experts: any issues transplanting Optiplex 9010 mobo?

I have a dandy Dell Optiplex 9010 whose case is all cracked and beat up, and it's too small to put in a better power supply and video card.

I'd like to maybe transplant that stuff into a new case so I can use the big power supply I already have, and a snazzy card that would never fit.

I've had issues with Lenovo boards not knowing how to control fans, etc, so I'm wondering if I'll encounter any similar weirdness?

...buying a new 1155 board is a little tougher to do these days! My local shops don't have any!

Okay, some of us don't like buying easy-to-fail electronics by ebay. A local shop means an instant replacement or refund, no shipping costs or delays. :|

You can put your Dell board into another case, whether a different power supply will work with it or not is the question. The Dell PS is only 200 watts, but may be proprietary, so a standard ATX PS may not power the Dell board.

I can already guarantee it's standard ATX power, since I've already replaced several over the years - this one included.

As much as I appreciate the comments, BAD advice is worse than NO advice. :(

Looks like I'll just have to DO it and report my findings (if anyone cares about this sort of thing!) :D

Thanks for the info. Some Dell Power Supplies are proprietary. Wasn't sure about this one, that's why I said "may".

You need to go back quite a few years now to find one of the proprietary supplies in the dell small units. The huge Precision "servers in a desktop case" is an exception. Even the tiny Opti3010 testbed under my desk is ATX standard.

I have come across many 'donated' dells in the past few years, some broken, some not. I've seen many non-dell standard ATX power supplies in the core2duo systems like the inspiron 530. I have two BTX dells still in service (barely) that are painfully obvious that the power supplies are different physical sizes. I think the pinout is still the same between ATX and BTX, someone can correct me if I am wrong.

I haven't see anything newer than a core2duo/core2quad from dell to be able to tell you if they're still using ATX supplies but I remember hearing holy hell from dell owners the last time they pulled that non-standard crap and I haven't heard it recently. Take that info with a grain of salt as its just a guess.

How old of the Precisions are we talking? I still have a precision 390 (core2duo) as an HTPC, but its running a BTX power supply. Newer than that, or older?

"390" covers several years. The 690's I had a standard atx connector but some odd extra connector that went down near the pair of CPUs (16-18pin) and then some smaller ones that feed the RAM boards. I had read about people using these as ATX and just leaving the rest of them unhooked.

yeah these Dells are so enginneered for their manufacturing that it may be a crapshoot to reuse the parts. Still if they are free why not go on the adventure

Forget it... I took a real close look at the board before I disassembled anything and saw what I feared. It'll take ATX power just fine, but fan headers, temp sensors, even the power button were all proprietary plugs. :(

...on the plus side, I should be able to tweak this 750W power supply into staying in place even though it's a little too long for the design, and I think I'll be able to cut, pull or beat the snot out of the drive cage until it falls out, then I can put in as big of a video card as I want! :sneaky::twisted:

...or just sell everything off before I make it really ugly. ;)
