Calling anyone who uses AutoCAD (Reading a R14 file in R12)

Can you edit a AutoCAD R.14 file in AutoCAD R.12? I know it is backward compatable (Edit 12 in 14) but I dunno about the other way. I need to know for my dad.

It never worked for me. I've had to ask the person with 14 to save it in version 12 format, and that worked fine.
