Heh. I had to go pick up a package one day after work and it was only the second or third time I had done the drive out to Tualatin. So I turn onto Murray to goto 26 and immediately hit bumper to bumper. After 15-20 minutes I finally get to the end of the block to the stop light and I see the hold up is due to the fact some... gentleman had hit a bus. Not in the intersection or anything like that. He rearended it while the bus was waiting at the light. I get across the intersection and not 100 feet farther down I see another accident that just happened involving three cars and taking out three of the four lanes. Fortunately my direction had the open lane. It was another ten minutes later when I remembered I could have taken Allen down to 217 instead of 26 and thus saving me the 30 minutes that it took to go a quarter mile.

The Max was delightfully convenient though, doubly so since my work subsidized monthly passes. Still have a few unused passes.

For having gone through this myself, see if you can't go out there a little ahead of time and scope things out, especially since you're being hired fulltime. I got hired two-three weeks prior to my start date so I had to take what I could get. The 10 miles didn't seem like it would be bad on paper but I really regretted not having gotten something closer to the office.

That's exactly what I'm doing, actually. I'm headed to Portland on Thursday on a GE-paid house-hunting trip which is exactly why I'm asking all these questions. I'm trying to get an idea of where I should concentrate my efforts since I have a limited time and don't want to spend too much of it just getting a feel for the area when I could instead be looking at apartments.

Thanks for the help, everyone! Keep it coming!

Go over to Reo's in Beaverton. Snoop Dogg's uncle owns it :D

But I wouldn't drive across town for it, like I did the first time.

anyways... Cops are kinda strict compare to LA standards; I mean, I can't even dare to speed when I was in Oregon this May. I was driving my friend's car and it has a radar detector. and yes, I see a lot of people got pulled over.

and, their Strip club sucks, (again, compare to LA). Consider they have the highest strip-club-per-capita, this is a shame.

on the bright side, the state of Oregon makes the best craft beer and pinot :)

people are generally nicer too. (btw: My friend works in Marino-polis, which just opened up a new branch in Pearl District)

It'd be about a 10 mile commute to work which might be 20 minutes or so down 217, I'd think. Getting into Portland proper doesn't look to be much of a challenge, either.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Beaverton is cool...

Hell, that entire area is cool man....just go with it.

Based on your map I'd say Beaverton, Tigard, SW Portland, etc...would suit you just fine.

I miss Portland. :(

i graduated portland state university about 25 yrs ago. i lived on Portland for 5 yrs. it's a very nice city.

and yes, my point is, i also miss it.

I like Oregon. I just remember getting yelled at for trying to pump my own gas.

They got a lot of bugs up there though. I ran off the road last time when a swarm hit me. Turns out that wasn't a swarm, that's just the way it is. I wasn't in Portland though. I was closer to the California border.

Another thing. They don't have reflectors on the road. So when a swarm of bugs hits your windshield it's really difficult to drive.

Indeed you will.

The traffic around Tualatin (where I-205 and I-5 merge) can be really bad. I'd definitely look for housing close by, at least to start with. You might want to consider places further to the west, like Sherwood too.

Welcome!

It's actually illegal to pump your own gas here.

Bugs are a problem WHERE? I've lived here my entire life and I haven't ever had a "bug problem." Bugs hitting your car make it hard to drive? WTF? I hardly ever hit any bugs and, where he's going to be living, it's not the middle of nowhere so he won't have trouble hitting bugs, either. In any case, bugs that make it difficult to drive must be the size of cows or something and I've never seen a bug like that so chances are bugs aren't going to be a problem where he lives.

There are reflectors all over the roads in and around major cities. If you can't see the road during the day, you're blind and there's these little things called headlights to use at night so you can see the road.

I ate at Reo's on Mother's day and the food was REALLY REALLY BAD. Don't know why, I've always gotten good food there.

Are you drunk?

Anyway, Portland has way more than just 1 strip club so "their strip club" that sucks couuld be any of them.

Portland is the microbrew capital of the world. We know real beer better than anyone else.

Portland residents are the biggest bunch of blowhard eco-terrorist tree-hugging green-peace-waving hippy (or lame young hippy wannabe) fanatics that I've ever seen. Portland is the biggest junkpile of freaks and weirdos in the northwest.

I know it looks ghetto. What do you expect with Snoop's uncle being the owner?

Anyway, their food is usually almost as good as free sex at the bunny ranch. It's insanely expensive and really really good, for the most part.

So Reo's has crabs as well? Yum.

Do you think the bunny ranch would be offended if I asked what their PM policy is? I should call them on Skype, record it and see what happens

Oregon isn't the wine capital of the world and I don't really like wine that much, so I don't give a fsck :p

Descerte would disagree :)

[correction: Oregon is the Pinot capital of the non-Burgundy world, for all you wine-geeks]

So? That's one single wine -far too peticular/specific to be noteworthy. The entire microbrew capital of the world? Now that's fscking kickass.

Everybody knows microbrew > macrobrew, so we rock and the rest of you don't. :D
