If you're not going to run an amp, it doesn't matter too much, Circuit City often times has Polk buy 1 set get a 2nd for half off. The best speakers in the world won't sound good running strictly off a head unit only. But since you have $100 to spend, quality is mostly a moot point.

For any price range I recommend Polk. I have Momo components in my Taurus, got them for 199 off ebay *retail is about 350'ish* they ROCK! the cheaper DB's are damn good for the price too.

check out the thread by "normalicy" here on Anandtech. He has some great stuff for sale. I know he has a pair of Infinty's and A LOT of other car audio stuff.

Six months ago I bought some 6*9 Pioneer car speakers for $100. They sound a lot better than the factory ones I had (my car is a 95). I also bought some 4" fronts to go along with them. Those were $50.

Pioneer has some decent 3-ways speakers for cheap, so it is possible you can spend around $100-$150 for the set. As far as sub goes, depends on how fast you want to lose your hearing. I find that with a set of speakers (powered by your deck), you can get just a 10" sub box, an amp that can handle that 10" box and you'd have decent sound within the vehicle.

Don't expect audiophile quality sound, but that setup would have enough juice to give you decent sounds and bass you can feel. Save your money for a home system, where you can actually listen to the song without wind/road noise or horns honking at ya.

BTW, why such an interest in putting so much money into a 16 year old car? It's not like it's gonna appreciate, or anything. The only difference between 91 and now, is that the boat anchor had a warranty. 😉

Because the volvo is a fricken tank. The odometer brok @ 230k miles and has run for another yr and a half. I figure it's got some more juice in it. The problem is though, the speakers are so worn out, from just wear and tear, and physical damage. I don't even think the 3 1/2" in the front work anymore. Another thing is the deck only plays cassetes, which wouldn't be a problem, I could get a cassete/mp3 player adapter, if it worked! So there are numerous things to be upgraded. I'm not looking to appreciate the value, just looking to get some [better] sound.

BTW, the trade in value is still like $2500 after all these years.😀

I dunno, I have a 91 740 wagon, and the speakers are severely deficient in the bass category--I'm not looking for a bump-bump sound or anything, but even with the bass all the way up on the EQ, it's barely present at all. I haven't popped off the covers to see if maybe the outer rubber is gone, but either way, I plan on replacing my speakers this year as well.
I'm also going to be replacing the Sony head unit the previous owners put in with an mp3-capable Clarion.

Shop around. CDT and Rainbow both make speakers for $100 a pair. Arc makes coaxials, but I don't know much about them other than what the rep said (they're supposed to be pretty awesome for the price). Diamond Audio and MB Quart have budget lines too, but I prefer silk dome tweeters.

If you want really cheap speakers...try partsxpress.com They have Pyle speakers for dirt cheap. I can't comment on their quality, but they are also sold on Newegg...so they can't be too terrible.

umm Newegg sells Powmax PSU's, which are hands down the worst PSU's ever made. I don't automatically assume newegg = quality 🙂

Pyle are aptly named, but if you're dollars are low they are better then most stock speakers.

what does owning a 740 have to do with car speakers?

That's just the car I have. The speaker fittings are rather unsuall and some users may not be able to comment on 5 1/4 speakers.... IDK. I just wanted to get some feedback from people who have the car and what they do.
